The theatrical cut was shorter and excised completely David Janssen's scenes since he'd died two years earlier (that's how long the film was on the shelf). The few TV airings it had restored his scenes.

Kudos to LLL on this long-overdue release, which I am enjoying a lot. It sounds to me like some old-style plate or room reverb was applied to the mixes in the 70s, and the brighter mastering has brought out the reverb a bit. Or it's possible a touch of reverb was added. Not a complaint, just wondering if anyone knows.

Good ear! We used period authentic analog reverb on this, no plug-ins!

Well done Neil! I am really looking forward to hearing this great release sometime next week!

You missed my point. For those who do not own a MQA capable gear, they get less than CD quality.

Ding, ding, ding! If I play this cd on my standard player, I'm going to get LOWER quality than a standard cd?? Really?

Deal breaker.

Yeah... When you try to compress data and store it beneath the noise floor of a recording (in this case, 16bit for redbook CD), you have to lose around 3 to 4 bit of resolution, so in essence, these new CDs are 12bits.

Even if you rip the CD, you still lose resolution as some bits (out of the 16) are used for MQA. You don't have this in regular Red Book CDs. It serves no purpose to use MQA.

Exactly. I refuse to pay for an already dying format (MQA is only still hanging on in there due to TIDAL streaming) that you need to buy an MQA equipped DAC to actually hear the extended resolution, and played on normal gear means you actually lose bits of resolution! A very bad move by Intrada (how many soundtrack fans do they think actually own an MQA dac?!) and I hope this is a one off release. I’m voting with my wallet in this instance. No sale.

It's not Intrada you should be throwing stones at, it's La La Land. The mistake is handing these things over to Bruce Botnick to master.

Air Force One wasn't great. I worry about US Marshals.

I think one of the co-producers participates in this forum. He needs to send a message to the powers that be. MQA = no sale!

For some reason, Jerry Goldsmith decided to bring is A-Game to this thing. I mean, it's f'n insanely good work and he could have farted in a tape recorderd and still would have been just fine.

Maybe that version is on the Bee side.

Just wanted to chime in. I can't say I am an expert about this stuff, I will say that right up front. But some thoughts:

I invested in a Brennan B2 music player, about two years ago. 1000 GIG capacity. The thing is built like a little brick! You can rip CD's directly onto it, and it converts everything to FLAC. It's wi-fi capable, and it connects automatically to the most updated music libraries out there. It's essentially a Linux system, if I am not mistaken. It connects to my Bose with a fiber optic connection. Recent releases, such as the Intrada Young Sherlock Holmes, La La Land's Superman, and SO MANY others - well they sound absolutely superb! The clarity and depth of these mastering efforts is displayed amazingly on my speaker system.

The B2 I own cannot handle MQA, but I wonder just how this new Swarm will sound. I personally am not interested in purchasing a brand new music player just to play this ONE release. I am very disappointed that the sound quality may suffer on a standard player. I feel like I may be missing out!

I have read here that it may not be audibly different, but I wonder now. Let's hope that the majority rules here. I understand this was a choice, perhaps a business decision, but I personally don't relish the idea of future releases taking away our choices!

(I would like to add that the SACD Great Train Robbery, played on a normal player, just doesn't cut it sound wise. The Quartet re-issue, on the other hand, sounds spectacular, and is a standard CD! Same for the Intrada release of this title from a few years ago.)

A very odd decision, indeed.

People like 16-bit CDs and/or 24-bit digital files, and an MQA CD is neither of the two.

I already don't particularly like La-La Land mastering choices, I much prefer what Intrada does, so this news is even more annoying.

Mine will be shipping soon - I didn't pay attention to this MQA aspect before ordering... now I'm curious if I will notice a difference in sound. I usually get 24bit files whenever possible.

I will gladly give my money to labels when they release the files in their native resolution.

Good news! I have another album coming out soon from La-La Land Records that was originally recorded at 44.1/16 bit.

So is this release going to sound bad if I rip it in Apple Music?

Not necessarily. But it could have been better.

The good news for us over 50s is that our ears will never be able to tell the difference.

It sounds fine, much better than the Prometheus version. For me, the shrill/ dry 70's sound kept me from really getting into the score. To me, this sounds much better, and I can't hear anything to complain about. Those who are passing on this are going to miss out.
