Anyone else having difficulty removing the discs from the box set?

I agree this is a superb collection even it does contain only a handful of rarities and inedits for we die hard Morricone collectors. The book format presentation is gorgeous BUT the biggest drawback which really mars it for me is the method used for storing the CDs in their folders. Whoever thought it was a good idea to enclose in them in slots which are so tight it is well nigh impossible to extract them without using great force and invariably leaving a dirty great fingerprint on the CD playing surface! To reinsert them is almost as difficult. May have to consider storing them externally.

I've been listening to the Jean-Paul-Belmondo set and realised that the track 7 Nocturne from Peur sur la ville is actually the theme from Orca, I'd never realised that before.

That's correct Chris, the melody in the beginning of Nocturne from Peur sur la ville has been re-used in the B-part (or middle part) of the ORCA theme. Although he did at least change some notes for the latter, and the instrumentation and arrangement are quite different.

The two Nocturne tracks from Peur sur la ville are unused demo tracks, refused by Henri Verneuil.
Re-use is not the right word here.

Orca theme 2 is a delicate flute over strings version, time 1:09
Orca theme 3 is a different version of the end title with a gorgeous flute overlay, time 1:56
Orca theme 4 is the original Main Title, time 3:11 and sounds glorious, and to be fair, I hadn't noticed they were mono until I ran them through Sound Forge.

Another nice surprise, the star of March Without Hope from GBU is complete. It's always been faded in before.

I have to say I'm impressed with what I've heard so far, the Dollars Trilogy sound wonderful.

The track Regans Theme from The Heretic that was recorded for the Hateful Eight is one of the loveliest melodies I've ever heard.

Thanks for the details, since I cannot get the box yet.
But I received the Orca inedits, and I can confirm thta they are outsanding.
Though I regret the duplicated track Early ices, glued in another track.
About Opening and Encounter it is a bit different: as the MBR CD they fortunately included the most complete rendition, not the background only take.

About GBU, Marcetta senza speranza (March without hope), it seems, according to my correspondent present in this topic, that is is identical to the all published versions, which are complete and not truncated. Do you have another info?

Regarding the so far unreleased stuff, don't forget the original music made for the ad "Rosa Excelsa (D § G), shot by Tornatore. Not my preferred musc for ad, especially for D § G, but fair enough to be interesting.

Happy to learn that Novecento was improved in sound.
Enjoy this nice whole item!

Sorry, I don't understand, "Aperture e incontro" (Opening and Encounter) is the same recording as on my old Legend CD, only that it sounds better.
It only sounds a little different when it gets repeated at the beginning of the longer "Orca (tema dell'orca IV)", but that's probably due to the different source. The music is still the same. To my knowledge the version on MBR wasn't different either. I don't own that release though.

Aperture e incontro is the same piece of music on all three releases, the difference is the sound quality. The Music Box release was a huge improvement on the Legend and this release improves on the Music Box.

As for March Without Hope, the difference here is that when the track starts the male chorus is at the same volume as the rest of the track, as it was on the original 1968 LP. Some recent releases have started the track by fading in the chorus at the start. I'm OCD about film music and as my introduction to The Good, The Bad and The Ugly was the 1968 LP, if the beginning of the track is different it doesn't seem right, not to me anyway. I might be mistaken but it appears that the "print through" on Pursuit, it's only noticeable right at the start, has also been removed. All in all I'm impressed with the mastering on this set.

March without Hope has always started on.the.THIRD bar...no doubt an editing error. The fadein is an attempt to smooth it out.

Is this set still worth buying if you already own The Complete Edition from 2008?

without forensically inspecting every track and an embarrassing lack of foreign language skills I'm finding it hard to find out how much double dipping there is...

They did include original version of Main Titles of ORCA this time which is previously unreleased!

This is brilliant version!

Which are the specific scores included in this set?

I would like to get this, even if, annoyingly, I already own A LOT of what's on it.
It's a decent price online, equating to around £5 per disc.
I'm gonna check out how much it is in FNAC in Barcelona, when I go there next week, and if it's a decent euro price and cheaper than the ones online, I might treat myself.

Well, all the content is precisely listed here, in our reference site dedicated to Morricone:
http://www.chimai.com/index.cfm?module=MUS&mode=ALB&id=5795

Besides the Leone films, it mainly features: Orca with 3 extra tracks, La chiave, Novecento (1900) restored, and many Italian, American and French thrillers and dramas such as Citta violenta, The Untouchables, State of Grace, Le clan des Siciliens, Argento's giallos, Joffé's The Mission and City of Joy, Verneuil-Belmondo movies, and The Eightful Eight, together with other scores excerpts and songs at the end.

Enjoy.

Hi Patrick

I'm desperate to get those additional cues from ORCA, do you think another label will issue a single CD of the score with the extra tracks?
I've got most of the stuff on this set and is darned expensive just for 3 cues.

Thanks Dave

Hi Dave,
Glad to be there and hear from you. I received some stuff from this box, and something else.
I am going to send you a private message.

For additional information, the next issue #18 of Maestro will be out soon and will contain an interview with Stéphane Lerouge, by our friend, one of the members of this board.

Take care.
