......U.S MARSHALS Expanded & SMALL SOLDIERS Expanded PLEASE!

+ 2 more which have never been released before in any format but hail from Universal Studios - so Varese Sarabande seems to be the most likely label to release them: 4) THRILLER (TV) 5) THE DON IS DEAD Looking at Varese's last batches, it seems that the label has changed its musical taste. Therefore I doubt they will release a set of Thriller scores. The good old days of The Alfred Hitchcock Hours are gone. I just hope they will resume to the golden and silver age releases but who really knows…

1. SMALL SOLDIERS 2. AIR FORCE ONE 3. OUR MAN FLINT / IN LIKE FLINT 4. HOLLOW MAN 5. MATINEE 6. THE OTHER 7. TIMELINE 8. THE OMEN 9. THE 13TH WARRIOR 10. LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION Though I'd take anything, let's be honest. (And I actually would like an expanded MR. BASEBALL - I love that score! But it would probably be a bit further down my wants list.) I'd no doubt buy a new PLANET OF THE APES release, but I've never had a problem with the sound on the current version, so it's not a priority for me.

Varese did that run of Goldsmith Universal scores for a while though (ie. Freud, Lonely Are the Brave, List of Adrian Messenger, The Red Pony) so I understand where you're coming from. But I don't think there's any reason why they would have exclusive ability to put out those two titles. Yavar Yes, I have been hoping that Varese would continue with their Universal Goldsmith and issue The Don Is Dead after The List of Adrian Messenger, but this seems not to be happening. I still think Varese could do a THRILLER set because they did do 3 volumes on THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR...

The Mephisto Waltz (1971) Never heard it. What's it like? The Mephisto Waltz musically distorts Franz Liszt & the Dies Irae. It's highly detailed textural music rather similar in approach to Goldsmith's TV movie score for The Brotherhood of the Bell. Instead of watching Dark Shadows or Lost in Space during your youth, Onya, you should have been watching The Mephisto Waltz.

Great responses! dbrooks, we actually don't need to bother Varese for The Mummy because they didn't release it originally. It was put out on Decca, owned by UMG (Universal Music Group), so Intrada would be the most likely to give it to us...and I hope they do, very soon! Yavar

Do you actually have a source saying that Varese is "holding on to the orchestral bits"? All the evidence points to Varese not keeping rights for anything on the Goldsmith at Fox box which was not previously released by them as a normal title (ie. Mephisto Waltz, The Other, Flints, Omens, etc.) Of the three discs of previously unreleased material: They had unreleased music from Alien, which later came out complete from Intrada. They featured the totally unreleased scores for The Detective, Von Ryan's Express, Fate Is the Hunter, Shock Treatment...these all later came out on Intrada, sometimes expanded. I don't know why we should assume Varese controls Damnation Alley. Yavar

Goldsmith's faux horror/suspense cues in Matinee were better than most composers' literal horror/suspense cues. And Goldsmith had that gift for functional scoring that you could listen to as if it were intended to be concert music. Both of those reasons make Matinee the best choice for a Varese Goldsmith remaster/reissue.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that it may be a cold day in hell before Varese does any of the things hoped for in this thread. I just don't think Varese is the company it was a decade or so ago. Am I wrong, or is Varese kind of the Walking Dead of the major soundtrack labels these days. I don't want to think like this, but I can't recall the last time I could get excited about anything they released. Varese has been surpassed as far as reissues go, since they've been focused on current scores, with expanded / reissues / special editions coming every few months. Sure, other labels have picked up the slack. But they're still delivering some good items. They'll do some of the scores mentioned, no doubt. They're just operating on their own schedule. Since being bought by Cutting Edge, their selection of current film scores HAS changed quite a bit. Maybe due to other labels ( Watertower, Madison Gate etc ) being more active and to the desires of Cutting Edge. But they'll at the least tackle Air Force One, almost certainly. Townson himself mentioned years back he'd wanted to do a lengthier album but couldn't afford it at the time.

I don't want to think like this, but I can't recall the last time I could get excited about anything they released. When it comes to expanded releases, Varese has always been slower in releasing those compared to Intrada and LLL. Their focus has always been more on current releases. On the one hand a shame, cause so many 90's titles deserve the deluxe treatment. But I don't think my bank account would be very pleased if Varese would also release a batch every other week. Their current releases aren't as spectacular as they used to be. In the 90's and 00's they released scores to some major films, these days the focus seems to be on smaller films. So on that account they aren't the mighty label that they used to be.
