No, don't worry, no bill!! I think Howard's post really made me realize how I went a bit overboard! Howard has a tendency to do that!! He just kind of flies in out of nowhere and pecks at you to wake you up!! Howards great! Howard?? Are you there?

You're right. And he made his point in one line while I took two paragraphs!

Yes - I'm fascinated by the events that led up to what is aguably the most insane period of human history - WWII. I've been a fan of Albert Finney since I first saw "Wolfen".

Anyhoo - nice talking about about epic films, misundertandings and sore asses with you, I'm off to bed. G'nite!

Every time the subject of Citizen Kane, 2001 or Lawrence of Arabia comes up someone has to declare that people like these movies because they think they're supposed to or it makes them look cool. I cannot STAND this. Don't tell me what I think and feel, please. I've seen all three of these movies dozens of times. In fact, 2001 and Lawrence of Arabia are playing in 70mm this week in L.A., and my wife and I are already making plans to see them again (we're also not the only ones among our friends eager to spend four or five hours of our lives and $14 a piece in ticket costs to "look cool"). With the length of these movies I've probably spent a solid week of my life just watching them in theaters. If I wasn't enjoying the viewing experience you'd have to pay me to do that.

Forgive me, but some of us actually find these movies vastly entertaining, even life-affirming. I'm sure as hell not going to apologize for that. However, for those of you who are bored by them, you do have my sympathy.

Actually, Jeff, the operative question ought to be, why do people like the Cinerama Dome???

Well, I hope you're wrong about that. Unfortunately, I think you're probably right about that.

I will post this another way, TO ANZALDIMAN, who may remember the Manufacturers Hanover commercial with Paul Lynde & summed up by none other than Rod Serling:

You know something? You're all being very nice...AND I DON'T LIKE IT.

I was completely bored by "Citizen Kane", but could appreciate its innovations involving the use of a movie camera, and its rather impressive editing. I was even more bored by "2001", but could appreciate its innovations with special effects. Tears of boredom were produced watching "Lawrence of Arabia", but I could appreciate nothing.

I love both Citizen Kane and Lawrence of Arabia; I have watched them both many times and never been bored by them. In my opinion, they are two of the best five films ever made. But when it comes right down to it, it is just a matter of taste. There are no absolutes. At least that's my opinion... you may disagree.

For what it's worth, I saw LAWRENCE in '62 on a big screen in NYC, I was 15, and I loved it. Continue to love it every time I see it, especially on a theater screen.

I'm glad to see I'm not alone in this, although I'm not surprised. However --

Am I the only one here who doesn't think Herbert Stothart was a hack?

Recommended viewing/listening:

THE WIZARD OF OZ
THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY

While I never really managed to like a Stothart score, I hesitate to use the word 'hack'.

But on the subject, I do love Jarre's score from "Lawrence" but didn't really care much for the film itself. It happens!!

Not only does the length of the film surpass my own butt factor, but I really don't understand the story very well I guess. I saw it when it came out, I saw it later. I couldn't tell you the story now if my life depended on it. What happened?

Howard,
Is Paul Lynde really dead?? Oh the humanities!! LOL!

Hey, just for the record..

I will watch the film again..Despite the fact that it may never be one of my favorites, If someone calls me on something, as Todesmelodie did, and they are really passionate about something, and know the subject BETTER than I do, and they also turn out to be a nice person as well, then, I will try to see the other side..It's just respect.. Maybe I can learn something. That's all..And as for being "too nice", well, I can spew a lot here but I can see through the words on this board and I'm just expressing how I feel..I like to think that we all show a little about our personalities on here through our posts..If I get a little "dramatic" sometimes, well, please forgive me cause' next time I may be wildly offbeat! And, I was just expressing how I feel. And I meant what I said! I learned a lot from that exchange..

Jim..
