It is a pretty great listen, although a lot of it is quite close to a somewhat obscure ballet by William Walton, The Quest (which is well worth a listen in its own right) and Xizor's Theme is one of the Dance of Knights variants from Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet (is there any great orchestral score that doesn't have something from that?!). I wouldn't normally mind (and sorry to poop this party) but this did strike me as an opportunity for him to write something different, somewhat unencumbered by a temp track. On an unrelated note, I listened to his Avengers score and that's absolutely terrific and massively more original and inspired (at least, as far as I know!).

And precisely what is your source for this information?
Is it something that’s posted in public?
did you get an email from Varese directly?
or is this something you magically heard in your head?

Varese told me directly on Facebook that no remastering had been done (for the CD release)

I recently found out McNeely had no time for SHADOWS....which is both odd & unfortunate.

I love the album in spite of temp-fu. RSNO with their trademark powerhouse playing. I love all their work for that reason, a lot of passion in their performance.

I have that Walton piece, off to listen!!!

If there was no remastering done for the vinyl format, and it's just a straight copy, then that's a bit of a yikes.

Interesting. I'm actually about to listen to that sometime reletively soon....listened to it only once before a long time ago...

Personally I always found that the 'The Seduction of Princess Leia' cue reminded me a lot of La Valse by Ravel,

I got the vinyl 4 days ago and it sounds great in my headphones. I'll have a listen in my living room on my speaker to see if the dynamic is the same as the CD. But I would imagine they always do a remaster for Vinyl.

You do have to master for vinyl. They were probably thinking new transfers or such.

It's on Facebook that they remastered for vinyl and did a straight re-issue of the CD.

Okay, great. Vinyl it shall be. Now all I need is for it to show up on the international store.

Agreed, it is very odd and unfortunate that he didn't have longer. I mean, he used similar "inspiration" as Williams did for the original scores, the Throne Room is famously very Walton-esque, but plenty of Williams' other mannerisms hark back to Walton, notably his harmonies and off kilter rhythms, yes, coupled with Williams' jazz background before anyone says!

However, yeah, I love Shadows of the Empire, guess it just surprised me given that you imagined that McNeely had free reign, but if he was under pressure, then perhaps not. Odd that they would rush something like that. It's a great appendix to the Star Wars musical universe, sitting happily just below Solo and above Rogue One in my estimation.

So it does! McNeely at least borrows from the best!

I wonder when Thaxton is going to come back to apologise to Spymaster about his snarky WRONG attitude and info?

One of the best Star Wars scores.

They also said the original sounded fine

Guess I'll have to be that one guy. I love Joel McNeely's work and his temp-tracking doesn't bother me at all. But no matter how hard I try I cannot get into this score.

It doesn't. Unless the recording itself is bad. Which is equally likely.

Clearing this up.

We have the original sources. We remastered the CD and Lp from them. So whoever said that never consulted with the producers.

I had a bit of trouble with it at first, too. But it definitely did grew on me after a couple of listens.
Musically it fits very well into the Star Wars-world, imho.

If there's one thing that still gives me a bit of trouble is that this doesn't sound like a Star Wars motion picture score - mostly because action music in Star Wars is usually filled up to the max with energy, but that's the one aspect that's really lacking here, it's much more laid back. Not a big deal overall, since the listening experience on this is still very fine, and if you haven't the original release I'd absolutely recommend getting this.

It's a nice contribution to the musical Star Wars universe, but don't expect a Star wars motion picture score.
