Certain cues had to be recorded by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in order for the film to be previewed at Cannes. Later, once the post-production process was officially underway, the film was re-edited to such an extent that most, if not all, of the NZSO performed cues were re-recorded by the London Philharmonic Orchestra to match the new timings of the scenes in question. A few tracks on the original single-disc OST for "The Fellowship of the Ring" are alternates, and one of those, 'The Breaking of the Fellowship', is indeed the version originally performed by the NZSO (however, the one in the 'Complete Recordings' box set is the film version performed by the LPO). 'The Bridge of Khazad-Dum' might be as well, but I can't confirm that.

I just did some more research, and the NZSO recordings were retained for the 'Mines of Moria' sequence in the finished film. However, it would appear that the alternate 'The Breaking of the Fellowship' recording I mentioned (as performed by the NZSO) is heard during the extended fan credits on the DVD of the film. Of course, this version may also be the one which appears on the single-disc soundtrack release (as I earlier claimed), but not having the DVD and the CD in front of me presently, I can't make the comparison. EDIT: I see that 'Swashbucker' has already corrected me.

Yeah, but I'm not clear on the where the new recordings of the Moria stuff begins.

There's so much music in that sequence that the performance probably alternates between the two orchestras. But we're agreed that at least 'The Bridge of Khazad-Dum' is definitely performed by the NZSO in the film, as is the alternate of 'The Breaking of the Fellowship' heard during the extended DVD fan credits.
