I hold a special place in my collection for his work, mainly because his music - The Incredibles - started me collecting. He has obviously come to be one of THE top composers in Hollywood today, after doing Star Trek and, of course, his now-famous UP. I can always hear the magic that is him in his music; it touches me with its tenderness at times (Lost/Ratatouille), gets me caught up in brassy excitement (Incredibles/MI3), or overwhelms me with its brilliant theme comes soaring across my speakers (Medal of Honor/Star Trek). Simply put, his music speaks to me, and my favorite language is music.
Anyone else?

I think he looks like being a really promising new talent.
What I've heard from him so far is very impressive.
I also think it's cool he's taking his time now, after having his best year so far, certainly accolades-wise.
Concentrating solely on LOST, taking a year out before his next score (reportedly).
I just hope it doesn't have the Don Davis effect on him. Although his connection with Pixar and Abrams should hold him in good stead.
He's a bright hope in what was looking like a bleak future (to me anyway).

Definitely one of my top composers at the moment, one whose new releases I anticipate nearly as much as a new John Powell or Christopher Gordon or and maybe even a hair more than some bigger names like Alexandre Desplat or Danny Elfman, who's also been doing superior work lately.

To me SPEED RACER is his magnum opus to date. Just pure fun that I still listen to regularly a couple years later. A score that just keeps on giving.

I also really like his video game score to TURNING POINT: FALL OF LIBERTY. I find it very annoying that it's only available on a DVD from which I have been unable to rip the audio, meaning I have to listen to it through my computer speakers. frown And I also think, as far as his VG scores go, that CALL OF DUTY is very underrated. Not as hummable as the MEDAL OF HONORs, which I also love, but a very listenable spiky action score nonetheless.

I must admit that I don't love the music for LOST as much as many -- it has some beautiful moments but trying to listen to the CD straight through I get bored -- but "Roar!" from CLOVERFIELD is magic, and RATATOUILLE is wonderful.

Yes. the Speed Racer soundtrack is fun. And I agree w/ the Lost comment: liked the season 1 soundtrack the best, but two and three seemed weaker to me. Maybe I need to revisit them.
I think the Call of Duty franchise soundtrack collection needs to be rereleased in a more complete form - for more content and to make it more widely available.

More available for sure, but I think it's fine contentwise. Has a nice flow. And both the Revell and Goldsmith sequels are good too, and repetitive enough that I wouldn't want much more music added. I thought that Goldsmith was planning an expanded release through his label . . . maybe it'll happen one of these years after HELEN OF TROY comes out!

Exactly EVERYTHING you said Giacchino-fan!

I had never heard of him until I went to see The Incredibles, which was actually incredible in itself since I usually don't go to see animated films. Anyway, I kept wondering during the movie who this guy was who wrote some of the best James Bond styled music I've heard in many years (along with some other wonderfully exciting and colorful music)? Michael Giacchinio, who's he?

I bought the CD and played it to death and started to look for some of his other stuff which is when I found Alias and later Lost. I ended up watching both shows prompted by wanting to see what the music was supporting and became a big fan of both series because of it.

I've since become a Giacchino completist having gotten everything of his but Call of Duty and Turning Point: Fall of Liberty. Not sure how I'll get those two unless they get digital releases like some of his other game scores (I'm not a gamer).

Anyway, he's my favorite contemporary film composer and one of the only hopes I have for the film music I really love being kept alive. He's put the fun back into film music for me. Plus he's a super nice guy to talk to!

Neither am I, but used copies of the games with the score albums can be found for less than the MSRP of most score CDs, and then you can either discard or resell the game itself and recoup some of the expense.

Thanks mastage, I'll check that avenue out! By the way, is this the version that has the score CD for Call of Duty? I can't find much in the way of the original game release, just this combination of the first 2.

I really dont think theres anyone better right now. I just love how he said in an interview that it seems as if scores are moving away from the style that John Williams/Jerry Goldsmith ushered back in decades ago and he wants to help keep that alive. MG is in the select group of composers along with Williams and Goldsmith (unreleased stuff) that I will buy the album for without even seeing the movie.

You're looking for the Call Of Duty Game Of The Year Edition, I believe. It comes in a box SHAPED like that (a big ol rectangle) but actually looks more like this

If I remember correctly, theres some confusion since theres no mention of the score CD being in the package! I bought one of these GOTY editions off Half.com five years ago - and the soundtrack was in it.

I've certainly found him to be a good composer, and a fun composer.

Some of his scores are among my personal favorites:

Star Trek, Lost, The Incredibles, M:I III, Ratattouille and UP.

He's also rather old school in many ways, not overly reliant on synths, and scores movies in a very old-fashioned way, which I appreciate.

If ind that he and Bear McCreary are producing great material, and are people to watch.

Thanks LeHah, that's what I was beginning to think. I just have to find one of those and the pickings look a bit slim.

Sorry to take this thread away from its orginal intention. I'll stop now!

LOST is probably the best, most touching and most interesting music I've ever heard. I just can't get enough of it.

But anyway - Call Of Duty. It's available in the deluxe edition of the game and as far as I can remember EB games did a preorder promo back before the game came out.

To be honest, I've never understood what the big deal is about his music. Doesn't do anything for me, and it just comes off as "pretty orchestral music" without anything to latch onto.

My suggestion? Look on Amazon Marketplace, Ebay and Half.com. Any seller worth his salt will be able to tell you if it has a soundtrack CD inside an item marked as "Like New" (meaning it was opened, but complete).

He had me at M:I-3. That was probably my favourite score of that year.

He blew me away with Star Trek.

Which kind of begs the question Thor, why post in this thread then? You've done this in other threads about Giacchino saying the exact same thing. We get it, no need to reiterate it and spoil a thread for those who do have the capacity too see more in his music than you do. Just seems a bit pointless that's all. This is just a friendly request (I'm in a playful mood today) which you can feel free to ignore! wink

His Star Trek grew on me for a while but I'm still not won over completely. I do have to say I saw a rendition of "the incredibles" at a film music evening played by a local orchestra nearby and it was a great piece. I enjoyed it a lot.

Oh, I don't know....I see these threads as no different than a regular roundtable discussion at a pub. Someone says he likes this or that thing, or is in favour of this or that, and then opens up the floor to the other guys around the table (whether they share his view or not). Of course, if the topic initiator asked everyone who disagreed or didn't share the preference to just shut up, that would be another thing, but that would have been kinda rude, don't you think?
