For most of us, Mick, our four-colour introductions came courtesy of the Distinguished Competition

The 75 best Batman comic book covers, according to the Comic Book Resources site. A lot of great picks, to be sure, and from every era. Batman was never better than when he was in those "funny books."

I'm looking forward to the big comic con here in Detroit this year. Guest artists include Jose Louis Garcia-Lopez, Arvell Jones, Kevin Maguire and Frank Brunner.

In the earliest days of the Nickelodeon cable channel, "Video Comics" was one of the programs I remember being hooked on. This was circa 1980. Thankfully, someone on YouTube has posted one of the programs. This one is Swamp Thing but I also remember them doing Adam Strange, as well:

Here's the program promo. Probably the first time I ever heard "Ride of the Valkyries":

I've droned on about this before, but I feel like doing it again. smile

My brief return to regular comic reading began in 1997, where I caught the excellent run of Batman by Doug Moench, Kelley Jones, and John Beatty. I loved the "ugly", Expressionist look of the art and I agreed wholeheartedly with a letterhack who predicted that their run would be remembered in the same breath as Len Wein-Bernie Wrightson's Swamp Thing. It may never reach those heights, but the Moench-Jones-Beatty Batman stands tall in my memory. I think it's a "Love it or Hate it" proposition, however.

Read about it here:

Now it's being reprinted in this fine hardcover. Here's vol. 1:

Sad news to report on the Batman artist front, as Norm Breyfogle has suffered a stroke.

A few months ago I had picked up his entire run on Detective Comics, as I enjoyed those books which were published right around the time I finished high school. It's an unheralded run but one that has gotten some overdue attention in recent years.

Ink- Alter Egos Exposed

Ever see this series? It's not nearly as in-depth as we'd like it to be, but it's a step in the right direction (even if the Elfmanesque music is a wee too loud for our aging orejas)

Re-Read Dept.

In preparation for the "Batman vs. Superman" onslaught/hit/debacle/etc., I've dragged out my copy of Frank Miller's forever-changing of the Batman mythos, The Dark Knight Returns. I haven't read the thing since the first Batman film's release in 1989, but in flipping through it, so much of it is still remarkably fresh in my mind. It forever purges the idiotic camp of the West-Ward series and too many years of the comic doing the same (though thankfully not in *my* lifetime).

DC is planning a hardcover release of Legends of the Dark Knight: Norm Breyfogle, Volume One for July 28, 2015. I hope the artist receives royalties from that release.

"Often credited with revitalizing the Dark Knight in the 1980’s, Norm Breyfogle’s Batman was known for his signature dynamic style. Collected here for the first time are some of the Bat’s most seminal moments—from the first appearances of Ratcatcher, the Ventriloquist and Cornelius Stirk to an epic battle against all four Clayfaces, all drawn with Breyfogle’s always dramatic style.

Written by comics greats Alan Grant (BATMAN: ANARKY), John Wagner (JUDGE DREDD) and more, LEGENDS OF THE DARK KNIGHT: NORM BREYFOGLE collects DETECTIVE COMICS #579, #582-594, #601-607 and stories from BATMAN ANNUAL #11-12."
