I love this score though it's weakness are the bombastic action music which seems to lack direction. Everything else is fabulous.

Agreed that the action music is the weakest part of the score, the lighter parts of the scores are great.

I totally agree. Having watched the film again after a longtime, for me it is a better standalone listen than with the film, if that makes sense.

I don't play it very often but Now We Are Free and a couple of other themes still rock. Zimmer managed to get "ordinary people" to listen to the score, a thing most other composers could only dream of.

A great track!

Interesting to see this thread revived as we approach 18 years on....

I'm also struck by how people are saying they like the quiet cues and don't like the battle music.
Complete opposite for me...I LOVED the battle music early in the film. Some of Zimmer's best work. I was left relatively cold by the "quiet" parts, especially the wailing women stuff.

This was back when I liked a lot of Zimmer's work. His more recent "sound design" stuff, especially with Christopher Nolan is awful and it's influence is a real drag on the quality of modern film scoring. (Except oddly, INTERSTELLAR, which I find compelling. Maybe because it seems more "minimalist" and less "sound design", at least to my ears).

Nothing not to unlike about Gladiator really, Zimmer did a solid job overall with great choral le motif's woven well with the film scenes, beautiful, i like all the cues in the battles & the octagon montage, nice layered brass selection by Hans, i don't rate all Scott's films that highly but this was a perfect partnership, its one of Han's top ten scores + its definitely one of Ridley's top ten films.

This score is a cinematic classic. One of Zimmer's best.

The End.

I just bought it..
I always liked it but it wasn't until I played LIVE IN PRAGUE that I realised this belongs in my collection.
[It also makes KING ARTHUR expendable and available for trade].
Brm

Ps Film composers I have spoken to greatly admire it. Fwiw

Lisa Gerrard doesn't wail.

Wailing women stuff? Me thinks someone is thinking of Troy.

Has your opinion of this Oscar nominated score changes since you listened to it?

Funny that you should ask this, but yes.

(It was abhorrent to me when I first heard it, but over the years, I've actually come to enjoy it.)

I like the score. I just re-watched GLADIATOR the other day, which I had not seen since its theatrical release, and I enjoyed the movie a lot more than I did the first time around as well. And it also gave me a new appreciation of the music.

There is a lot of Holst and even more Wagner in it, sure, but when I now re-watched the movie, these music choices made perfect sense to me. (After all, it's Romans against Germanic tribes.)

So the music for GLADIATOR has risen in my estimation over the years quite a bit.

I wasn't actually into scores when this first came out - that didn't happen until a year later (FotR sparked my journey).

But I loved the OST from the word go and I still do and will warmly welcome an expansion when it happens. I had initially thought that this score would warrant another 4-CD package, but unlike Sleepy Hollow I don't think this score has anywhere near as many revised/alternate cues.

Certainly, the odd action moment does go a bit overboard, such as the moment they first enter the Colisseum, but I personally still like it.

The themes for Maximus and Commodus in particular are beautiful and haunting.

Strength & Honour is an absolutely magnificent cue. It would grace any score.

There are a lot of alternates and inserts in the score

track 3 on the CD is actually labelled 1m1 on the score and even 1m1 has an insert - meaning there is a lof of electronic music recorded with solo instruments or the music which starts out in celle/bass are supposes to be sustended for at least 2-3 minuts - and the first 3 track on the cd runs about 12 minutes

3m11 - the bodies has an alternate

3m12 - to marikesh has an alternate

4m20 - six man fight has an altetnate

4m24 - affraid of dark has an alternate

3m30 has an overdub - meaning there are a recording without that one

i could easily see a 4CD-set here - anf if not maybe with the 2 released soundtrack as cd's 3 and 4

Even though I really like this score, I hardly ever listen to it. Mostly because the release is so messy and off putting for me. And it didnt really help when they released the second one WITH dialogue...! I have actually never listened to it. Except one track "Duduk of the North". And that was only last year I started listening to it because I loved it in his LIVE show. I mostly just listen to the live suites.

But I would very much welcome a proper release!
