Michael Giacchino did two scores.. so I don't buy that Mission tradition.

Well this movie is directed by Christopher McQuarry which may have a different opinion than Brad Bird. And as reminded by zhu2 , he also changed Art Director, Cinematographer, Production designer (who worked on both Reacher and RN) and Costume designer...

It's just that film score fans are very passionate people (well music in general has this kind of primal feeling), Joe Kraemer's score was highly regarded in those circles (I certainly loved it), so you have it.
But this thread is more than 200 posts long (I certainly contributed to that) while we won't hear a note of the score before two months, so we should indeed better just wait for it.

So well, good luck to Lorne Balfe, I hope he pulls it off - I mean, it can't be worse than "Terminator Genesys", right? ;-) At least, the movie should be better, so that's a start !
And for the pessimists there will be score-less scenes too ;-)

@lennoxasaki Does Fallout have a scoreless action scene? Like Rogue Nation and Jack Reacher car chase.
@chrismcquarrie Yes

Hearing the score within the context of movie before praising or putting it down is a great idea, WillGold...Looking at opinions on a score before we've heard a note has never made a lot of sense to me.

I give Balfe "benefit of the doubt" because I've heard one or two or more very unappealing scores from Goldsmith. Those scores fit the movies but I didn't like them at all. Yet, Goldsmith is one of my favorites.

The difference is that Goldsmith's body of work speaks for itself. There is virtually nothing in Balfe's filmography that convinces me he'll be able to compose something outside of the RC template.

Yikes! MIDI much? I can practically see the piano roller in Logic scrolling past the notes of this piece. I don't think it's serving to lend much confidence in Balfe's musicality.

You should check out Lego Batman, Genius season 1 & 2, and Home. Seriously, go listen to Home to find killer melodies and themes, Lego Batman for fun animated writing that isn't too cheesy or "child-like", and then Genius for great dramatic non-Zimmer-like music.

Just give him a chance smile He's still fairly young in his career and this is his biggest film yet that will likely be both a critical hit and box office hit (at least I hope the film is both lol), and based on those three I mentioned, I think he may be able to deliver!

And on top of that, it's a generic Thomas Newman-y Easy Button effort.

And examples here and there are not indicative of a body of work already existing. And Goldsmith was craning out good work in his earliest years.

I just finished listening to his score to the VG Beyond: Two Souls and really thought it was good.

I don't understand why him scoring this film is such a big problem? Is it a generation thing??

Bare in mind, I've never seen or heard anything to do with Mission Impossible outside of the Cruise films.

Token millennial chiming in — it’s not a generational thing.

He’s just a very bland, anonymous composer replacing a composer who delivered one of the best scores of the last 18 years.

Really? I mean I thought Kraemer's score was mostly strong (I've only heard it a few times) and the actual recording quality itself was superb, but placing it amongst the best scores of the last 18 years?? Wow, I'm not sure I can give it that sort of praise... but then again I didn't find the film all that and I find it extremely hard to seperate the quality of one's music from a film I don't especially hold in high regard.

Nine times out of ten, I'm going to pick Elfman's score over his, Sorry. It's not necessarily because his music is better even, it's because I much prefer the film, therefore for that sole reason the music resonates with me more and therefore I have a deeper emotional connection to it.

That would be awesome! Fingers crossed! cool

Off topic and likely in poor taste, I hate to be so superficial but Brian Tyler's waxy Vanilla Ice meets Max Headroom appearance seems to be trying desperately to disturb me... and it is succeeding. He looks like a sixty year old man attempting to vamp his way back into high school. Also, I haven't been enthralled with any music he's written post "Frailty". And aside from the evidence of that film and "Children Of Dune", I'd say he's a sub-pare Ramin Djwandi level. I don't now... I used to have enthusiasm for Tyler, but he just disappoints time and time again with forgettable hackery.

I know, that's mean. I kinda regret calling attention to it, but then I see how smug he is and suddenly I'm not terribly convicted. No one seems to ever say anything disparaging about Brian Tyler though, and that seems a rather glaring oversight. Anyway, he's wealthy, he'll recover... to get more collagen injections and haunt my soul.

"This is in poor taste, but I'll say it anyway. I take his physical appearance personally, because that's what's important when it comes to musical composition."

And smug? He always comes across as friendly and genuine in interviews, and if his reach exceeds his grasp, musically, who can fault him for trying?

Well, you're not wrong, but somebody's gotta acknowledge the elephant in the room that is his ridiculous pompadour and saran wrapped skull. I suppose smug is not correct, more like vain. Tyler sure doesn't mind getting on a social justice pulpit about lgbtqiapk issues though. That's kinda smug in my opinion.

Hahaha Vanilla Ice meets Max Headroom is hilarious. I also used to see real promise with him, but he's gotten more and more generic as he's gotten bigger.

I enjoy Tyler's work. Not my favorite composer, but I enjoy enough of his work that I will blind buy his scores. I like that his releases tend to be lengthy, and have most, if not all of his score. A few of his scores I enjoy include Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 3, Columbus Circle, Bangkok Dangerous, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Now You See Me, Standing Up, and his video game score for Assassin's Creed.

I have only seen him in person once, which was at a music panel at San Diego Comic Con. He came across as incredibly friendly, and seemed to enjoy interacting with the fans.

Tyler sure doesn't mind getting on a social justice pulpit about lgbtqiapk issues though. That's kinda smug in my opinion.

I am not sure how his support of the LGBT community, a group that has historically been, and continues to be, unduly discriminated against is smug.

Back on topic, I preordered the score to this, and am looking forward to hearing Balfe's score for this film. If his score is half as good as Lego Batman, it should be a lot of fun.

Sounds OK... it's got energy at least.

Rather predictably though it does have that typically clichéd low budget electronic sound (aka Zimmer clones on auto-pilot) and a film like this needs a muscular orchestral sound (in my opinion at least).

Still, I bought Balfe's CD for 'Pacific Rim: Uprising' (which only has a couple of listenable tracks, the rest is just noise) so I'll be buying this too... and I am still looking forward to his version of the M:I theme!
