Atomic Blonde 1.5/10 Painful attempt at a "cool" spy flick. The Ghosts of Mars structure doesn't work. Charlize Theron's attempt at an English accent makes her sound/seem brain damaged when it sctually reaches anywhere near England. Wall to wall pop songs and a generic score don't add much. The cinematography is rubbish, the usual blue filter casting a pall over much of it. The fight scenes are well done but hàve the very modern thing of gunmen running right up to people to be disarmed. No memorable visuals or set pieces. The script includes the idiotic line of àn English person saying "you do the math", which is just woeful drivel, and a sentence no English person ever said in life. It's just rubbish. but, hey, it's the 80s, so, cooool! Also, long one take shots aren't impressive when it's obviously just all done later in a computer, including removing a gun a baddie could easily just pick up, but suddenly disappears to prolong the fight scene.

Thor- Ragnarok- 0-5

They turned Thor into a whiny, girly, emasculated buffoon. Every scene is exposition. What is supposed to be humor couldn’t be more embarrassingly stupid. Thor is taken down and kidnapped by some young drunken warrior chick who uses a taser on him. (repeatedly)

The acting is sci fi movie of the week caliber. Thor’s fight scenes are inexplicably tracked with 80’s vocal rock music. The female villain is all powerful for no reason. Yet not able to quickly dispose of anyone in the grand final. Odin goes the way of Yoda for reasons I don’t understand.

The art direction is awful. Looks like a Mighty Morphin Power Rangers movie. The CGI is all over the place. Some of the flashy effects are cool, but the creature effects range from average to terrible.

I’ve barely touched the surface and this is just 60 minutes into the story. This film is a joke, but not a good one. But critics, the general audience, including die hard comic books fans apparently love this adaption.

The Thing 82.

Solid film, an unknown imitation inhabits the Antarctic & came from an unknown place that wipes out a crew mysteriously, good/cast/action, suspenseful, decent cinematography, special effects. Carpenter had a habit of using the same actors in movies with Little effect, anyway, it worked far better here, but it did lack a woman in a co/lead role. 6/10 wink

Halloween 2 (1981) 5/10. Rather dull and Jamie Lee Curtis has next to nothing to do in it for an hour, then for half an hour just runs about. It gets marks for Dean Cundey's great cinematography, effective music, Donald Pleasance (even though he's been better), and some decent moments. Michael Myers really does pay for his decision not to break a gentle walking pace.

Live by Night 7/10
Not bad in any respect but not great in any either. Interesting story, always a sucker for gaangster films.

Dick Tracy 7/10
Batman in a trench coat.

Assault On Wall Street 9/10

Do not be discouraged by the fact this is an Uwe Boll film. He's done some not so great stuff, but this is superlative. Dominick Purcell is excellent in this politically incorrect yet utterly valid tale of Wall Street corruption, how things invariably trickle down to the common man, and a conspiracy of events. I found it to be reminiscent of Death Of A Salesman.

Mr. Boll should delve into this sort of sober territory more often. He is good at it.

Murder on the Orient Express (2017) 6.5/10

Just a shade less good than A View to a Kill,

I'm sure I'll enjoy this on a Sunday afternoon in the distant future, just before View To A Kill comes on. smile

Lethal Weapon 9/10. What a great action movie! And what a great Blu-ray box set. I'm going to watch each film every Saturday up to a week before Christmas (I'm away on the last Saturday before Christmas), unless of course I'm out on the raz (who am I kidding, it'll be Lethal Weapon). And watching the film, I do wonder how they can make a fifth now that Michael Kaman is dead, his music is the heart & soul of the film (& I now have the La-La Land box setsmile)

I sort of did on the other side of the board. It's not as gross as a typical Snyder film. But it has all his earmarks. Weak script, cheap looking CGI, dull depressing characters. Pretty joyless. Love Gal as Wonder Women in everything I've seen thus far though. wink

Happy Burnout (2017) 6/10
In German with subtitles.
A good movie that was interesting enough to keep my interest on a plane. Lots of crazy characters with issues in a mental institution. Has many of the same themes as similar movies and is a bit predictable but the characters felt realistic enough. Nothing you should go out of your way to watch but it is fun still at times.

Mamma o papà? (2017) 6/10
Italian with Subtitles
A bit ridiculous at times but it was funny watching the parents freak out because neither of them wanted custody of the kids. Watched on a plane and it was enjoyable enough that I finished the second half on a later flight to see what happened. Lower score because it is ridiculous to think of anyone actually doing some of the stupid things they do.

Coco (2017) - 9/10
Spanish with no subtitles
Watched this in Chile at a theater where they didn't have subtitles so I may have missed the occasional bit of the story but overall didn't have trouble understanding the basic plot with my medium level Spanish.

Emotional story with some strong writing in the songs that they used and fairly weak score. Sucked me in and I can't wait to watch it again in Spanish but later with subtitles. One bit of the plot is somewhat overused but otherwise was a good ride with a few twists.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri: 9 out of 10.
Three Billboards and Wind River
have been my two favorite movies in 2017. It is interesting that even though they are very different movies, both deal with the mystery surrounding the death of teenage girls and the searing anguish of their parents who want justice. In both movies, the actors give superb performances.

In Three Billboards, Francis McDormand is very good; she always is a fine actress. Woody Harrelson also does a good job. The big surprise is the amazing performance by Sam Rockwell. He plays one of the most unique characters I’ve ever seen in a movie, and he takes the audience on an emotional rollercoaster. Hate him, hate him, hate him and then kind of like him, then kind of pity him, then hate him and then like him, and then pity him and then admire him, etc. He envelopes this character in a kind of child-like innocence.

It isn’t a fast paced movie. It is a character study about the corrosive effects of anger and grief. It is also a very dark comedy. The audience laughed at times and teared up at times.

Some will not like the ending. Packages are not always neatly tied up.

Joan, well stated, it is in the top 10 for the year with Wind River for me. It is a surprisingly funny and also dark movie, gotta say, it is a bit overboard with the profanities, but a terrific film.

Willy Wonka. 71

A classic from songs to simple dialogue, the film pulls off having its main character half-way threw the movie, & it still holds up well, Gene Wilder is at times frightening & edgy, at others warm & social, great performance by wilder.

The kids were all tremendous, believably wicked & got what came of them. The Chocolate factory looked magnificent, excellent props, Granpa Joe, Charlie, The Buckets, who were sweet, kind & earnest, finally got there horizon.

The only taint was Umpa Lumpa songs, pretty awful. wink 7/10

Colossal (2017) - 6/10
Few extra points because the ending somewhat redeemed the otherwise disappointing movie. I barely see what the writers were going for under it all but it took what could have been a fun concept and turned it into a darker take focusing on abusive main characters twisting it into something else. Lots of dysfunctional characters and overall strange direction it takes. I'm glad I rented it on Blu-ray from Netflix rather than watching it in theaters. It would have been a lot more fun if it had been a lot more of a comedy like I had assumed from the trailers.

Duel 71.

Brilliant film, still holds its own 47 years later, long before Christine & the Hitcher, Dennis Weaver takes the wheel of a 1971 Plymouth Valiant on a deserted mountain road when he overtakes a tanker truck, which proves to be the biggest mistake.

He's then tracked by Carey Loftin, the same driver of that tanker truck who starts taking him throughout the film what ensues is a brutal, psychological duel of cat-mouse, this film marks Spielberg's breakthrough into the movie industry & he proves his talent as a top director, Spielberg provides suspense, action & paranoia, Duel keeps you hooked from start to finish. 8.5/10.

It took ages to wade through the Politically Correct, touchy-feely junk people were reviewing in order to get to this one, but it was worth it!

Despicable Me 3 - 7.5/10. Good fun for kids.

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - 5.5/10 more of the same cartoonish stuff that has some nice moments and humour but feels very long ànd relentless.

The House 0.5/10. Truly Awful "comedy" that just seems to be a string of badly ad-libbed scenes relying on swearing. No real plot, stakes, urgency or characters.Just really bad and sadly typical of Ferrell who is just the same in every film it seems. Abysmal. Though I did like Jason Mandzukis.
