  • I've said this on the other side of the board, the show gives me enough laughs, that I come back each week. I also like the most of the main cast, model work and music.

But much like JJ Abrams and really the whole lot in Hollywood, they're simply living out the fantasy of directing movies and television shows they loved growing up. And the studios are happy to oblige. There's seems to be no desire, or ability to create an original concept, or at least one that isn't derivative of everything else.

Albeit unavoidable, unlike the behavior of a command officer who traipses all willy nilly in primeval grounds, almost as if a Prime Directive wasn't invented right after she committed her promenade.

    Classic Kelly.

Just a heads-up, this starts it's run in the UK this Thursday (14th) on the Fox Channel.
I'm no fan of MacFarlane (I'm still waiting for ONE JOKE of his I find funny), so I will be tuning in mainly to hear the retro scoring of Broughton, McNeely and co.
If Seth wins me over during that time, well done to him.

A lot of jokes fall flat, or are just to juvenile for my taste. But there's always a few in each episode that actually make me laugh. Most of the time it's the performance more than the joke though.

I will be surprised if the character of Bortus doesn't get at least one good laugh out of you this season, Kev. I just finished it and can't wait for season 2! I've never been a MacFarlane fan before but I guess I am one now based on this show. I really had my doubts after the first episode or two, but now I'm a believer.

I'd still love to have a new original sci-fi show like Babylon 5 or Firefly or Farscape (The Expanse is excellent but there is very little fun to be had, and it's based on a book series so not sure it quite counts), but this'll do just fine to scratch my nostalgic Star Trek itch for the time being.

Filming for the second season begins in February. Too bad we'll probably have to wait until September or October to hear more new scoring. Unless who ever scored the last episode that was shuffled to the second season, puts a cue or two up.

You guys know, don't you, that our own Jeff Bond has a book about The Orville coming out soon: http://amzn.to/2AUHiC5

    The World of The Orville

"this lavish companion to The Orville takes you behind the scenes through concept art, on-set photography and technical schematics to explore the show’s production design, costumes, makeup prosthetics and visual effects."

Jeff Bond's written a book about The Orville and no mention of him writing on the MUSIC?!! Hopefully (probably?) he has and it just isn't mentioned in the blurb...

Nothing official has been stated about an album release of the music, so it's probably too soon to expect any mention of Jeff writing about the music.

I haven't had the chance to pick this up yet. Has anyone here read it?

Season two has started filming today.

Two new people have joined on as cast members, and writer/story editor from "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and "Star Trek: Voyager", Joe Menosky, has joined the show.

    https://trekmovie.com/2018/02/26/the-orville-season-2-production-starts-star-trek-writer-joe-menosky-joins/

    As I posted elsewhere:

I'm in the middle ground with Menosky.

On the one hand he did "Darmok". On the other he did "The Chase" (one of the worst episodes of TNG), as well as other mediocre episodes.

On Voyager he wrote episodes like "Timeless" and "The Thaw" (the second features what I think is a very TOS idea for an ending), but then he wrote episodes like "The Gift" and "The Killing Game".

Seems he waste more good ideas on Voyager than that show deserved.

Menosky is notorious for writing scripts (especially on TNG with bombs like "Mask" or "Emergence") which seem like he took a hit of mushrooms before getting down to work. He was usually paired with Braga on Voyager and I think that helped temper both men's weaknesses.

(That said, he did write some great solo Voyager eps, like "Muse" and "Blink of an Eye.")

Curious if the composers remain the same.

Debney's profile page at Kraft-Engel Management has a cue to listen to:

    It's only 1:50 long though.

Great find, and a very nice cue it is! And I noticed a nice instrumental suite from THE GREATEST SHOWMAN on the same page.

    It's only a partial though.

So cool that this newbie is getting a chance at cutting his teeth on a sci-fi project with ample resources. Hope it pans out well for him, and his music is allowed to shine.

Haven't watched this show but knowing McFarlane (and the team of composers he's assembled), it's choked full of solid, thematic orchestral music. I'm sure an album will materialize before too long.
