In the horror comedy THE FRIGHTENERS, after a tragic car accident kills his wife, "Frank Bannister" (Michael J. Fox) discovers he can communicate with the dead to con people. However, when a demonic spirit appears, he may be the only one who can stop it. There are some scenes with the spirits that are set in a cemetery. When writer Fran Walsh and writer-director Peter Jackson were creating the part of the Drill Sergeant in the graveyard, they wrote the part as a spoof of R. Lee Ermey's character in FULL METAL JACKET, with the intention of getting an actor in New Zealand (where the film was shot) for the role. But they didn't feel the actors who auditioned were right, and finally ended up approaching Ermey himself, who took the role of "Sergeant Hiles." The script originally included another character at the cemetery called the Gatekeeper, a big chubby angel who would be acting as the cemetery's guardian. A large Gatekeeper prop was created, and some scenes with him were filmed. However, these were omitted from the film, as Peter Jackson couldn't really find a good explanation for the angel's presence. Most of its role was taken over by the Sergeant Hiles character. Danny Elfman's score for the 1996 film was released by MCA.

R. Lee Ermey co-starred with Dennis Quaid and Danny Glover in SWITCHBACK, about an FBI agent, "Frank LaCrosse" (Dennis Quaid), who has been trailing the serial killer that murdered his child. A subplot involves a local election for sheriff in Amarillo, Texas, where most of the characters start out. The local incumbent, "Sheriff Buck Olmstead" (Ermey), who loses the election, becomes the agent's crucial ally at a moment when he needs all the help he can get. Jeb Stuart directed this 1997 thriller. None of Basil Poledouris' score showed up on the RCA song-track CD, so Intrada released it in 2000 and re-issued it in 2014. R.
