I second this! I wouldn't know about the reviews unless Adam posted them, and reading them gets me excited for Tyler's second contribution to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Two weeks and the film will be out in the US!
I'm a huge Patrick Doyle fan and was more than a little bummed when I heard he wasn't coming back. I thought he wrote lovely themes and his score enhanced the movie very much.
Thor was about a God learning humility and that's very much reflected in his theme. Thor: The Dark World is presumably about a hero grossing galaxies and saving the world, and his theme conveys that really well. Loki's also given a mysterious theme and presumably Malekith also though I'll need more listens and to see the movie to confirm this.
The score is enormous, makes the other Marvel Universe scores seem tiny. It's actually all a bit overwhelming at the start. But while Tyler's Iron Man 3 (which I liked fine) score lost momentum half way through, I found this to be a very engaging listen from start to finish. Track 7 is utterly gorgeous. Yes there's more than a little borrowing from The Dark Knight, at one point it seems note for note, but I was so taken by the huge, unabashed heroism of the score that I can overlook that.
I've never really been big on Tyler but this score won me over in a big way. I wouldn't be at all disappointed to see him attached to Age of Ultron, in fact after this I'd be disappointed if he didn't score it.
A warning though. If you want to be spoiler-free do not listen to the score. That won't make sense now but it will soon enough.
Just been listening on Spotify to the whole thing. I was a bit disappointed as it sounded style wise so like Iron Man 3. It's like Marvel said, okay we liked what you did for IM3, do it's again but a little different.
loving the hell out of this score. if it wasn't for "Evil Dead" this would be my favorite score of the year. love the main theme which thankfully gets a lot of mileage on the score. and that brass writing....
I can't stop playing "Marvel Studios Fanfare". so damn addictive. what a year for filmmusic.
While Iron Man 3 had a more readily identifiable main theme IMO, I'm liking this Thor score much more as a complete listen. One of the themes does sound a bit like Children of Dune, but COD is still my favorite Tyler score so I'll take more like it any day.
