First, an Oscar for JOHN OTTMAN (albeit in another category). Very nice and I believe he deserves it. I think you might need to review your expectations regarding editing : https://twitter.com/gagadaily/status/1099856926979096577?s=09 Ha, right! I don't know anything about editing. My previous post wasn't clear. I mean that for me John Ottman is a music composer and I believe he deserves an Oscar because of his output as a whole. Over the last 20 years or so, he has composed some of the most enjoyable film scores out there. Therefore it's somehow ironic that he got an Oscar as an editor and not as a composer, but honestly I don't care about the category. I'm just happy for him and the combination of the words "John Ottman, Academy Award Winner" sounds like "music to my ears" (pun intended). Plus he was presented by no less than freaking awesome Michael "Batman" Keaton!! Now back to Göransson.

No, I'm really, truly asking. No CD = No sale ! At a certain point, this shtick just becomes sad, right? >Shtick = sad >Truth = sad >Shtick = truth

The editing is really poor but Ottman was obviously working with limited material. There’s an argument to be made that the movie probably wouldn’t even exist without him. A really thankless job. My thoughts exactly, lots of polish required to make it work. One further point — in the scene linked above, Aiden Gillen’s character is shot at two close but slightly different angles and Ottman is constantly cutting between the two. It’s really jarring but evidence that half of the footage was probably reshot and they never matched up the two. Then Ottman was awarded for sewing together different directorial styles, thus saving an illegible movie? Disneyfilm could use an editor like that.

What I hope is that this Oscar helps big bold symphonic music to return to its rightfull place, as the effective standard which brings dramatic sense and emotional coherence to this otherwise overblown art form. Agreed. Black Panther had several signature motives, themes and even sounds that were threaded throughout the score. Much can be said about the glorious African style used or its instrumentation but the score's true effectiveness comes from Goransson's ability to weave and develop these key identifiers in a dramatic manner so that the music elevates and ties in narrative key points. Architecture/form/structure should never be dismissed. I'm hoping this does in fact pave the way for more composers to apply all aspects of their craft.
