"The Touchables" is very strange, but I dig it.
Looks like the film was far out too.

Mr Bellochio,

rule #1 of any soundtrack message board:

"There is no need to justify oneself to the humour-challenged Ford A. Thaxton."

Put the guy on your ignore list, and you'll lead a much happier online life! smile

Based on a number of the comments I've seen posted about Mr. Thorne on this forum it appears that very few have seen or heard any of his other works beyond SUPERMAN II and III and perhaps RETURN TO LONESOME DOVE.

They seem to be basing their views on his career solely on the first two projects for the most part.

Have any of your heard any of his others scores such as ARABIAN ADVENTURE, HELP, THE BED SITTING ROOM, MY WICKED WICKED WAYS, RETURN OF SHERLOCK HOLMES, MURPHY'S WAY (Theme by John Barry), THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS (Theme by John Barry), THE EVIL THAT MEN DO, HANNIE CAULDER etc..

His output speaks for itself.

The Man has talent and a gift for melody in my view..

So let's chat about this OTHER WORKS beyond the SUPERMAN Movies..

Anyone interested?

Ford A. Thaxton

Hi Ford,
I've always liked Thorne's music. It would be good to see some more of his scores issued. I'm wondering if any of his music for Sinful Davey still exists ? This film has always interested me especially as I remember it being filmed over here in Ireland in 1969. I know that John Barry was also involved and I have read that Barry even recorded some music before leaving the project. Can you throw any light on this ? I have also recently heard that there is a 'boot' of Hannie Caulder going around with an expanded score. If this is true I'd sure like to see a legit release of this as I really like Hannie Caulder's music. Lastly I do agree with the other posters here who spoke of The Persuaders, I agree this would make a great CD release, any chance ?
Niall.

As I recall, there was a LP release of that score if memory serves me correctly.

Ford A. Thaxton

Now that you mention it, I think I do remember seeing it in a record store at the time. But, now I'm relying on swiss cheese memory, I don't think I have enough allowance money on me at the time to get it and I never saw it again.

Every so often, I check eBay or used LP shops and have yet to track it down. Now I've got the old curiosity going again.

This is a good thread, I feel the need to track down more of Mr. Thorne's work.

A few weeks ago I saw an obscure British cold war "thriller" called MASTER SPY, dating from 1964, which is the earliest Ken Thorne score that I've heard. It appears to be the film that preceded his involvement with HELP! The Main Title (under a chess game) reminded me of some of lesser episode scores for THE MAN FROM UNCLE, but elsewhere there were a few interesting pieces. Hardly a film to inspire the best in a composer, though.

According to IMDB,ASCAP, BMI and GOODLE* there is no film by this name, it's some sort of fantasy.

It appears to only exist in the minds of few fools on another forum who need to get a life.

Ken Thorne? Master craftsman, I enjoy the relatively small amount of music I've heard of his, especially those bits that don't incorporate Beatles tunes.

TJ? Funny - didn't deserve the roasting.

Thorne did a wonderful job scoring "Inspector Clouseau," a 1968 release with Alan Arkin in the title role. The main theme in particular is catchy and fun, and very much in the spirit of the 1960's.

The score was released on a United Artists' LP, but clearly not too many people (here or elsewhere) know it.

You are mistaken, he needs to be roasted Napalm for posting that lie...

IMHO of course

(The sad thing is you just don't understand what he did was WRONG).

No, Ford. The sad thing is that you didn't just ignore it.

It was a silly post and you made it into this monstrous "thing" by overreacting, and the subsequent reactions and overreactions concerning it has distracted from any discussion of Maestro Thorne. In effect, your inability to ignore a harmless japester has ruined the thread and done poor service to your original intent.

I'm partial to his THE RETURN OF ALAN FIVEHOUSE, myself.

Well THAT had me laughing off my derrier for a good couple of minutes.

Instead of all this "Get a life. Next" literal-minded rubbish, maybe someone here needs to get a sense of humour. Apart from helping to enjoy life more, it also prevents against strokes etc.

Ken Thorne's additional music from A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM is a treat, IMO. I recommend the Ryko album to everyone (unless, one hates musicals... ).

MURPHY'S WAR sounded very John Barry to me. Don't get me wrong, I don't think it's a bad score, not at all, I just don't think is a ideal example to show Mr. Thorne's talent as a unique composer.

Now, that I've finally ordered the Blue Box, I'm looking forward hearing 'his' Superman Music for the first time.

I don't know anything about Mr. Thorne, so sorry if I come off as a total ignorant here, but I assume the HELP! you're talking about is the Beatles film?

Except for that, did Thorne do any work on popular songs? Did he write and/or arrange some songs that we might have heard of?

Thor,

You might know this "trip-hop" defining track by PORTISHEAD that samples INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU's main theme:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PnNrtUTwa4

INSPECTOR CLOSEAU is a masterpiece; a perfect cool Britannia counterpart for Mancini's own brand of cinematic loungepop. Alan Haven, who handled organ chores on THE KNACK for John Barry, reappeared on this score with lots of blazing Hammond/B3 solos. The fact that PORTISHEAD used it on a track that more or less sums up "trip-hop" and the mid-late 90s love of Cool Britannia speaks volumes.

I enjoy ARABIAN ADVENTURE alot, but I am also about the only person on this forum that seems to acknowledge that the music from the score reappears in SUPERMAN II. The "memory kiss" punchline with the swirling vibes and bass plucks are taken directly from the moment in ARABIAN ADVENTURE where the hero is magically transported from danger onto a magic carpet. The music where CLARK gets beaten the second time by Rocky in SUPERMAN II (" you don't have enough sense to stay down, do ya?") is lifted directly from the confrontation music between Christopher Lee and the hero from ARABIAN ADVENTURE. I'm not complaining as it's great music, but it's worth pointing out.

Thorne also played Christopher Palmer to Bill Wyman's Tony Banks on GREEN ICE, IIRC.

Has anyone seen LASSITER?? God, that tanked, didn't it!!???!!

HOW I WON THE WAR is great, as is BEDSITTING ROOM, JUGGERNAUGHT and I assume ROYAL FLASH too- not seen THE RITZ or FINDERS KEEPERS, easily the most obscure Lester movies.

Having just gone through the film "The Touchables", I'd like to ask for a release of the score. There's not much, in my estimation, so maybe couple it with something else.

It took nearly 10 years for a reply to my post. "The Touchables" is one very weird album, but I would enjoy having it on Cd, particularly if more of Ken Thorne's score is made available.

I'm not overly familiar with this man's work but I absolutely love ARABIAN ADVENTURE. It just soars! It's filled with the kind of lush, swirling Respighi/Ravel/Rimsky-Korsakov-inspired orchestral fantasy writing I just love, but infused with stirring middle eastern harmonic structures - and it's recorded gorgeously in that velvety London sound courtesy of the great John Richards. It belongs in everyone's collection!

Regarding the Music for the Persuaders: I was in Contact with Ken Thorne sometime around 2005 and he did not have any of the 8! hours of Music, in either score or tape/CD in his posession. The company that produced the Persuaders ITC closed down in 1982, and the tapes got lost.
