I wish LLL lowered their shipping costs.
Its really adding up.

Someone has to pay for it.

Joe Caps here. In my hometown of Elmira, N.Y. we had a great second run theater. The owner of that theater loved mag stereo prints, and every time Big Country was shown, and the Vikings, they were always stereo.

I think Tadlow are doing a rerecording of a lot of the score?

The last I heard on this front was that the closest thing to a re-recording coming was a Moross compilation that included the Bremner recording.

Yes. That is probably it. What is that like?

I have the Bremer recording, it is excellent, though I believe it is not the complete score, it runs under an hour, so I have ordered the new release. But for anyone who loves this grand score I would get both.

I'm shocked that even after 30+ years of collecting and thousands of soundtrack albums in my collection, I have never owned this classic at all. I am really looking forward to checking out this new release when it arrives!

Yeah? You should try living in Australia. I ordered from Amazon once. Their shipping quote was such that I told them I could ship an elephant to Iceland for the same money. They never replied.

Mine arrived today. For anyone who missed the LLL version, they'll be happy with this.
But for me, comparing the LLL Main Title with the Quartet version, I prefer the LLL.
Seems like some detail has been sucked out of the Quartet version. Rather than being smoother (which I assume was the intention), the sound is relatively dull. But I suppose some might prefer the less bright sound of the Quartet, so it's down to individual taste.
To be honest, in a blind test I think it's the LLL that I would have guessed was the newer, improved version of the two. The new one sounds different but, for me, not better.
I haven't yet auditioned the second album CD in the new set.

What a shock!
Rathbone is dissatisfied with the sound quality!

Australian customers should be grateful anybody ships there!

Don't have the Quartet release as yet. However, I find the LLL version harsh sounding in comparison to the SAE version and that's the one I listen to...

I haven't heard the SAE. Let us know how it compares to the Quartet.
My earlier comments were based on a side-by-side comparison, but I just played some of the Quartet again and, without playing it alongside the LLL, it sounds very good in its own right. It could be that an exaggerated brightness of the LLL gives a false impression that the Quartet is a bit dull-sounding when comparing them directly. Playing on its own right now, the Quartet sounds fine.
By the way, the Quartet booklet and notes are very well done.

S E N S A T I O N A L.

Gosh: William Wyler, Gregory Peck, Chuck Heston AND Jerome Moross. Just finished listening. What a marvelous score!!! Haven't heard it for a long time - this is really Western-Americana at the top. Moros sensibility for melody, timing and especially rhythm is unbelievable (Track Nr. 8: The Raid - Goosebumps!).

One of the best scores ever written in the history of cinema. A masterpiece.

Thanks everybody at Quartet (and thanks to Message Board Superstar Joan Hue for encouraging in another thread long time ago :-D ).

Spectacular release.

I very much agree with your comments El Aurence. Back in 1964 it was one of the first soundtrack records I bought.
It is indeed one of the best film scores ever composed! I'm glad Quartet brought it back for those who missed it.
Bravo Quartet!

Yes, and I have also warmed to the presentation of the Quartet over the previous edition. At first I was fooled by a side-by-side comparison, with the brightness I was used to on the LLL making the Quartet sound relatively dull. But I was wrong to speak about it too soon. Listening to the new CD a couple more times on its own, it is a smoother and more pleasing listen over its duration. The LLL is harsher overall. I know I said differently earlier, but I now pick the new Quartet over the rest.
However, the second CD with the album content is a total waste of time and the processed version in particular sounds appalling. Better if it had remained a single CD release.

Glad you now like it much better Basil. I got my copy yesterday, will play it today. Like you mentioned before, very colorful and interesting booklet.

Oh yeah, I won't play my LLL version! smile

I'm thinking, while listening to "The Welcoming" track, that this might be one of the most magnificent pieces of film music in my entire collection. Or at least, the one cue that best sums up everything film score music has to offer, all rolled into one track. So colorful, adventurous, engaging, energetic, surging in creativity, spirited, so brilliantly attuned to the scene in the film, both beautiful and ruggedly handsome at the same time, and romantic in a grand way. And it seems a complete piece of music, with such natural-sounding progression from beginning to end. I think this would be the one track I'd pick to best represent all the good things I see and hear in film music, and the brilliance of the composers. It's also one of the pieces I'd most like to see performed live. I imagine the orchestra members cavorting almost as nimbly as the cowboys in the movie scene itself.
