I finally got around to spinning my "Magic" (Goldsmith/Varese Deluxe). I was a big fan of the book by William Goldman, but was always really irritated by the sound of Hopkins' voices I the film. Apparently it marred the movie score as well, since all I really remembered about it was the harmonic. Till last night...wow, this is obviously the product of a master a the peak of his powers. A tiny bit Herrmann-esque at times (well I mean, this movie was obviously at least Hitchcock-conscious)...but Herrmann-esque is a very good thing imo. I've also rarely heard such magical writing for strings from the maestro...the lovey stuff at times reaches nearl-Alfredian heights.
