Almost 80?! Boy am I feeling old. Jim Hickman and Nate Thurmond now gone in their 70s. Them in their 70s? Sheesh.

Joe Kapp was born in 1938.

Nice to see this thread bumped up, albeit ever-so-briefly amid Star Wars composer psycho nerd fan stalking...

My all-time favorite NFL Films cue, "War Footing", by Jack Trombey. It plays around 18:00 into the Super Bowl XIII highlight film. It sounds like a western-sea shanty pastiche to me, but I love it, especially since it captures the atmosphere of the visuals so well.

The old paper version of FSM did a very nice article on him.
I still have it somewhere in my FSM stacks.

Thanks again for listing that Mr. Phelps. One I missed.

Former Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green has died, age 67. During Green's tenure, the Vikings reached the NFC Championship twice and wer in the playoffs eight of ten years.

Here's a rather wobbly vhs recording of the 1998 Vikings yearbook, a season in which the team went 15-1 and scored the most points in NFL history up to that time.

1998 seems like a loooong time ago....

Are all the specific "inspirations" for the various familiar-sounding Spence compositions acknowledged in the liner notes for the big set, or else catalogued anywhere by Spence fans?

I once took the time to catalogue them but threw it out.
You can do your own comparisons

Most NFL Films music could be called a pastiche of styles and compositions popular during a given time period but somehow it still ends up sounding like "NFL Films musc" whether or not one is familiar with what's being adapted.

That reminds me: does anyone remember "Fire Engine" from Fahrenheit tracked in on occasion?

Narrated by the late great Harry Kalas.

Kalas was the popular Philadelphia Phillies baseball broadcaster for many years, and after John Facenda's passing he took over for years as the new signature voice of NFL Films. The music of course went off in a new direction as well under the baton's of Tom Hedden and David Robidoux. Those two men had the luxury of having much bigger orchestras to perform their compositions than Spence ever had in the early days.

Sad news about the passing of Dennis Green. A well respected coach and mentor to many of his players and coaches on those Vikings teams.

Just had to add this last entry before the thread goes away again.

From the NFL Network's "The Missing Rings" documentary series. The story of the 1969 Minnesota Vikings narrated by Tom Selleck. Top notch production and film quality from almost 50 years ago has been remarkably restored in these programs.

At about 4:30 in, Joe Kapp states that during a game he yelled a few words to the legendary Los Angeles Rams Hall of Fame defensive end Deacon Jones. I'm sure Mr. Phelps will be amused. I wonder what Deacon barked back across the line of scrimmage to Kapp in response. big grin RIP Deacon Jones.

I almost did miss it, as this thread dropped faster than someone hit by Deacon Jones, or in this board's case, Captain Kirk.

Selleck has a great narrator's voice, as all those years on Magnum, P.I. must have been good training.

I remember seeing a couple of these "Missing Rings" episodes and wonder how many episodes in total there have been. Other shows should include '68 Colts, '76 Steelers, '83 Redskins, '98 Vikings, and '07 Patriots. Oh, and '84 Dolphins. wink

Can't see many of today's quarterbacks diving headfirst into anything--except maybe a strip club. Joe Kapp and The Deacon were a different breed of cat, that's for sure.

"Round Up" is Sam Spence at his best--it's also a quintessential cue and a fond memory of my otherwise misbegotten childhood.

All hail the music of Sam Spence.

Jim, I believe there have been five episodes of “The Missing Rings”:
1981 Chargers
1969 Vikings
1990 Bills
1988 Bengals
1998 Vikings
I agree with your selection of good potential episodes.

I've often wondered how Kapp would have done with a "Landry shotgun" (circa 1975). While Kapp possessed few if any of Roger Staubach's skills, I think his skills were reminiscent of the Bill Kilmer style of passing and play, especially the early 60's version of the shotgun offense (49ers). Landry's version might have helped Kapp if he could have had it available.

It's interesting to hear the various interpretations of Spence's music by the other composers as these recent documentaries are made. In the above 1969 Vikings documentary for example, you hear one of Spence's rousing martial themes reworked into a forlorn piano piece expressing the agony of defeat. Nice. You'll hear more of the reworked Spence pieces quite a bit if you happen to catch some of the marathons of the ongoing newer documentaries on the NFL Network.

And I agree on Tom Selleck's narration. Good job. They've used Gene Hackman, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, and Martin Sheen as narrators in past productions but I'm especially fond of the job Selleck did here.

Thank goodness for Dave Volsky and his passion for this music. Thanks Dave. All of the classic NFL Films music by Spence and others all in one place. And here we can actually enjoy snippets of Sam Spence conducting his music. "Game Day".

I`ve just discovered this 3 part German TV crime series based on a book by Francis Durbridge. In the 60s and 70s those Durbridge crime cliffhangers were extremely popular on German TV.

This one is "Wie ein Blitz" from 1970. It was the first German Durbridge TV series in color. It had a German cast but was completely filmed in England. It stars Paul Hubschmid and Tony Curtis` ex wife Christine Kaufmann.

This was one of the few German movies that Sam Spence scored in the 70s. There isn`t very much score in the film. The music has a very nice 60s easy listening touch and the theme is super catchy and used very prominentely in the score. Especially the 3 lengthy end credits are great. It would make a very nice soundtrack release but I can imagine that the tapes are lost.

Had this in rotation this morning and thought I'd share it here. RIP Sam Spence.

Not forgetting:

I'm not a Raiders fan (I support the Falcons) but it's a stirring theme.

It is indeed. Classic Spence. As is the narrative by the late great John Facenda.

40 for 60 - The 1969 Minnesota Vikings.

Including the great Chuck Foreman who was not on that team thrown in for good measure. wink
