Something about this thread and the one about romantic minimalism is haunting me. Past polls at this website indicate the vast majority of film music listeners listen as the result of viewing a film first or viewing film in general. On that basis, the power within a solid marriage between film and music bespeaks a collaborative artform but for most filmgoers the visual remains the thing, whereas the music is given no more than incidental recognition. Except for the learned few smile who know and recognize the power of music, and who have no qualms whatsoever in giving this most emotional artistic medium the credit it deserves for making the motion picture experience that much more enjoyable. Even if most filmgoers don't want to get into it, at best, or at worst just plain have their heads up their you-know-what.

"Did they mention the music?" Is it any wonder why Mancini asked?

It boils down to giving the underrated the rating. And I have also come to appreciate that stand-alone soundtrack listeners are no less attracted than film-first 'orthodoxers' to the most emotional artistic medium apart from its hybrid marriage to film. And that's because both groups share a mutual recognition of the special power within short, compact bursts called cues vs. a progressive symphony. Which, for similar reasons, may be compared to a preference for short stories over novels.

The shorter the cue the potentially greater compact burst? Hmm...

One short cue (0:37 or so) by Jerry Goldsmith that captivated me when I saw POWDER in the theater
was "First Day At School." It's the cue when the school bus drives up to the school to let off the styudents.
I was so disappointed when it wasn't on the commercial release...but the cue eventually did make it to an unmentionable.

"Let There Be Light" from The Towering Inferno.

It's a 37 second long fanfare and it is fantastic!

Yes that is the very best and my favorite short cue as well! Mr Williams can pack a lot power into 37 seconds.
My other favorite short cue is completely on the other side of that emotional spectrum. it is the cue, "Fa Counts", from Georges Delerue's score to "Day of the Dolphin". Wish i could provide an audio cue for that but there is none that i could find.

Yes, great. That's the one I suggested to Thor when he was looking for a short intro to his film music radio/ pod thing jobby.

I was going to mention something else, but it's clean gone out my head. Sorry.

But a theme is not a cue. Are you perhaps thinking of his entrance, (which is actually part of a longer cue)? Or some other scene?

Preston, sure a theme can be a short cue. There's 3 or 4 scenes when Dr. Pretorius opens the scene and a very short "cue" is played consisting of his theme. A cue is a cue young man! smile
