Nick Bicât. Brilliant, yet almost unknown in the US.

Although he's more famous for his conducting, I do enjoy the scores Bob Cobb has composed.

also, from Neil Davidge, this is the catchiest thing I heard last year, and, for an action score, the rest of it is pretty damn good too.

Richard Harvey, Robert Folk, and Naoki Sato (at least in the USA) would be my picks.

Some really good answers here, lots I haven't heard of. I like DeputeyRiley's suggestions in particular, Daniel Licht has been impressing on Dexter for years and I love his gypsy-ish score for Thinner. Marcus Trumpp did great work on the Mesrine movies with Vincent Cassell, but I've not heard of him since aside from a few credits of Beltrami scores. Boris Elkis' score to The Perfect Getaway is one I really enjoy, it's a shame he doesn't appear to have done anything since.

for my answer though, I'll have to go with Rolfe Kent, as I always do on topics like these! Such a wonderful gift for melody and texture, he's written some magnificent stuff, much of which is unreleased (Election, Citizen Ruth, Mean Girls, the Last Shot, Sex and Death 101, Failure to Launch, the list goes on!)

You speak the truth, maximus_rh! I thought Boris Elkis was the best new/emerging composer (at least stateside) I had heard almost since the turn of the century. I love his score to A Perfect Getaway. So rich, evocative, fresh, and modern. Glad someone else likes it, you may be the first person I've encountered who digs it.

Also, Mark Kilian is quite underrated. Loved his score for Carpenter's The Ward, which to me, like Elkis and A Perfect Getaway, was the powerful announcement of a very talented composer to watch.

I'm not sure he is underrated per se, more that he isn't discussed much, but I've always enjoyed the work of Jean-Claude Petit.

Frederic Talgorn. Underused if not underrated. And Gabriel Yared. Ok, maybe he's not that underrated either. But he gets nowhere near the praise of say, an Elfman or a Powell. Sure, different kinds of composers but hey, I have a soft spot for Yared, especially after first hearing his sublime work on Cold Mountain. Every moment of it is perfect.

Thomas Newman,Randy Newman,Christopher Young,and Michael Giacchino

Three of those four are positively enormous composers who have scored many of the highest grossing movies of the last 20 years.

(and the 4th is still pretty damn successful).

Roy Budd.
(appreciated mostly by 'old' Brits only)

and probably Ron Goodwin. (not enough scores on CDs).

Edgar "Cookie" Fairchild was, for the most part a musical director, both at Universal Studios and for Eddie Cantor's radio program.

He was given the chance to write a very appealing serio-comic score for the Abbott & Costello picture LITTLE GIANT, released in 1946. Unfortunately, the film tanked commercially as did Fairchild's opportunities to write more dramatic scores. A real pity. His score for LITTLE GIANT has wonderful melodies, scherzo's, and an emotional climax worthy of his colleague Frank Skinner.

I love animated films and shows, but the composers often get overlooked:

Scott Bradley (early Tom & Jerry, Tex Avery)

Dean Elliott (Chuck Jones' late 60's Tom & Jerry, Thundarr the Barbarian, and other Ruby-Spears productions like the The Trouble With Miss Switch)

Johnny Douglas (Transformers, GI Joe, Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends)

Shuki Levy (He-Man, She-Ra, tons of other 80's shows)

Finally, I will mention another very underrated live-action composer:

Craig Safan (The Last Starfighter, Remo Williams)

JOEL Goldsmith. He have always been in the shadow of his great father but there are a lot of great unreleased music by Goldsmith junior.

I would need to know this:

Underrated in relation to what? The general public? The film industry? Among film score fans?

Underrated in the sense that they are/were underUSED?

Underrated in the sense that they don't get the "right" acclaim they should (even though they may be famous)?

Different answers depending on how you define it.
