The movie was propaganda but very well made. They didn't tell you that the Cristeros murdered several teachers in their area for teaching evolution and it just happens that the Catholic Church is waging a freedom of religion war against Pres. Obama.

But hey the music was great.

Wrong place to start blaming the Catholic Church. This is a film music board not a political one.

Please keep the discussion focused on the music and not the political/religious content. Thanks.

The end credits cue from the score can now be heard on YouTube.

I love Horner to be sure. A little recycled FOUR FEATHERS in there and the Love Theme or what sounds like a love theme sounds just like

ONE HAND, ONE HEART from WEST SIDE STORY. At 4:35 I'm hearing the melody of "Only Death can part us now" (Lyrics from ONE HAND, ONE HEART)

And who's not up for a little Wailing...latina style?

But there's a lot of new sounding good stuff too. I'm buying it.

I had the pleasure to bring a piece from this beautiful score to the "Best of Film Music 2011/2012" concert in Cordoba a couple of months ago. smile

Listened to the samples. Sounded like Horner on autopilot (and he basically took his main theme from The Four Feathers and put it in here without any alteration).

Don't buy it then. Horner on autopilot is better than most modern scores IMHO. So I will be buying it! It sounded great.

Well, I just lost Mr. Horner 10 years ago ...
it just seems that (and I know that it is a lame and repetitive quote): theres nothing in his scores I have not heard before in one or two of his scores 10 years ago...

.....and no I´m not a hopeless golden age guysmile

I was extremely dissapointed in this score. I'm a huge Horner fan but this was too much. I generally don't mind his self-referencing but this score had 'danger motif', 'braveheart' and note for note 'four feathers' all over it. I'm sure people here will recognize even more of his previous work here.

I would have to listen to the CD if I ever get it to see if I change my mind, Black Gold was much better in my opinion.

It STILL isn't in iTunes' US Store (it is internationally!!!), though it is available through Amazon MP3.

If I go digital, I've always had good luck with iTunes having an acceptable fidelity for a digital download. I've never downloaded from Amazon MP3 except a few random single tracks here and there.

Anyone know if the score fidelity coming from Amazon is equivalent to iTunes? I always get scared of the compression of MP3s and seem to have better luck with AAC. I just don't want something overly compressed.

You can buy it from HDtracks in FLAC or AIFF and not worry at all about those compression issues.

Same thing. AIFF is for Mac users.

I talked with a guy at a label about this very thing a few months back. He said the order of quality goes HDTracks, Google, Amazon, Itunes.

HDtracks offers lossless FLAC/AIFF, Google offer 320KBPS, Amazon and Itunes are about the same but he told me Amazon's master is based from a FLAC file and I've bought them to compare and it always seems Amazon is a tad bit brighter sounding to me.

If you love the Batman score pick that up in 24/96. Oh my god is all I have to say!

This score might well be one of the more anticipated scores in Horner history. I suppose there's many times when scores have sat on shelves for extended periods before being released. Its just not often we learn about them so publicly as we did for Cristiada!

So here it is, after a year and a half of waiting? And was it worth it?

The answer is a resounding YES. This is the Horner of Willow writing in broad, dense strokes. This is a very special Horner score.

I don't think there was a dull moment in the score. It is vibrant with heartbreaking themes, extreme shifts of emotion, incredible intelligence, and extreme depth. Horner has the orchestra doing something at every moment of activity.

The themes themselves are plenty and go through about every permutation possible. I'm not sure a theme is played the same twice throughout the score...except for maybe when Clara Sanabras is singing. But that's the exception, and her voice is heartbreaking enough you welcome the beauty of its appearances.

Speaking of Clara, I'm not sure WHAT inspired Horner to pick her, but it was indeed an inspired choice. Her solo work is along the lines of an obnoxious Loreena McKennitt...I was not even remotely impressed. I was thinking the choice of Sanabras was like picking McKennitt to wail on The Passion of the Christ or some such thing. Yet, Sanabras aquits herself amazingly...singing with a great pain and bittersweet heartbreak. Her appearances aren't sparse, but aren't common either. They're welcomed when they appear.

Interestingly, the danger theme appears here at about the same level as Willow or Enemy at the Gates, but he takes it through just about every permutation of it he can.

Also interesting, I counted hearing themes not just from The Four Feathers, but also from Braveheart, The New World, and Avatar. Look for those cameo appearances (except for The Four Feathers, each of the above appear once...so yes, I see them as cameos!). I urge you to get past these things and appreciate the score for what it is. Scores like this just aren't written anymore.

But yes, listen for instrumental creativity dating back to Krull...Willow...all the big Horner hits. This score certainly can stand proudly among them. Its just that good. Sadly, I fear it won't get that kind of recognition due to the low profile of the movie.

But this is as ***** as ***** scores come. Certainly the best of Horner's 2011/2012 output.

Yeah I have to say... this is a hell of a CD. Yeah.. the danger motif rears its head right there in the first track... but so help me, I love it lol.

Even given his penchant for repeating himself, damn he can still write some stunningly good melodies and the man has an absolute top notch handle on drama.

Wonderful stuff. Really...a fantastic listen.

Those are some very nice samples, and indeed much better IMO than anything Horner's done in years....perhaps even since Iris (but garnering from 30 second samples isn't always smart...)

At the start I felt like I was listening to 'The Four Masks of Bravehaert' but it's like somebody said, once you get passed that it's again clear what an extremely good dramatist Horner is. He sure knows how to get the adrenaline going...lot of goosebumps.
