Hmm, it might be a "mistake" to go there

All you need to do is read some of the responses on that thread , they obviously like drama and attention.

There is a thread I started that is specifically dedicated to me. It is very free of drama, but there is a lot of attention (to me). I highly recommend it.

ARTHUR: Well, on second thought, let's not go to JW Forums. It is a silly place.

And now they have a thread asking: "Are We Douchebags?"
http://www.jwfan.com/forums/index.php?/topic/27581-are-we-douchebags/&page=1

Hum. Well, it might be that if you reach the point where you have to ask if you are a douchebag.....

Of course it's in jest, best I can tell.

Considering the vast majority voted "yes"...

Like any Internet community, it probably pays to get a feel for the forum before jumping in. An easier transition, or at least a good way of knowing whether a place is right for you. There are plenty of stodgier film score places on the Internet - here, Filmtracks, etc etc. I read/like many of them, but post differently because the place/vibe is different.

I've been at JWFan since The Phantom Menace. People come in with every new movie/release. Some people popped up around The Force Awakens. Another just mentioned that he popped in around LLL's Jurassic Park release last fall. Heck, I think one person even loved The BFG for some reason. They stuck around and are regular posters and it's pretty good.

At any rate, films1, I'd strongly recommend against using your very first post in any community, film score-related or not, to namecall some other poster. I think you're misreading hostility in a lot of the jokey posts there, but any actual hostility that was posted probably stems from that.

I was a member there for a number of years. I grew to dislike it very much. I simply stopped logging in and have never come back to post. I look in now and then to see if there's anything of interest to read, but often I leave with nothing.

I don't think I've ever used the FilmTracks forum.

I post, wen I have something to offer, at the JerryGoldsmithOnline.com forum.

I'm a regular every day at maintitles.net

I used to post at the MovieMusicUK, but for what ever reason, people stopped using the site and content dwindled and now it's just page after page after fucking page after even more fucking pages of PR for some release from a PR lady who qualifies as a spammer at this point.
It was a decent place. Jon considered shutting it down, but the forum is still there. I would hope people took the site back up and left it as an alternative, honestly.

Maintitles.net should be the model for all film music messageboards! So brilliant in every conceivable way (except that the activity is disappointingly low compared to places like FSM and JWFAN). I've recommended it many times here, but I think very few from here have actually given it a chance. That could of course be both a good and bad thing.

That's definitely a good point. Although the 'tone' here is rather different, the hostility level (when things get "dirty") is far worse than on JWFAN.

I would say that every forum has its ups and downs and members who may be impolite, or very aggressive etc. There is no perfect forum. It's just that the internet is perfect for everyone to develop such attitudes, even if he/she isn't like that in real life.
I learned that a bit late so now I try not to take anything personally.

In my early days of writing in forums, I frequently felt I was insulted.

Well, there's some room for improvement, but really, MainTitles just carried over it's members and ideas from it's predecessor, the now defunct ScoreReviews.com (that means it no longer exists, so don't go there -- you'll probably get a virus).

Well actually, no, he just demonstrated the kind of humor we share over at JWFan. It's not for everyone.

Childish humor, Well, if it's really humor.... And I don't even talk about people who often just post things like that: "LOTR > Star Wars".

Some discussions are just a succession of "A > B", nothing more.

It's really like "my father is stronger than yours". We could almost believe we are in the kindergarden.

I see how it is, Bespin! I thought we had a connection over our love of wine and alcohol but true colors come to light here. You can go ahead and block me if you like.

Once a JWFan, always a JWFan! I remember your posts well, brother!

Some years ago, a work friend of mine joined a forum created to discuss current events and social issues. It supposedly brought folks together who share the same point of view. When she joined, she encountered a couple of existing members who commented on every single comment she posted and apparently did the same to every new member. She made the "mistake" of pointing this out to these trolling members and they declared forum war on her. What made it ridiculous was that the moderator did nothing to prevent it.

She finally took the advice of some of us in the office (we heard about it almost every day at lunch) to stop posting there. Before she finally did, she was contacted by a couple of reasonable members who told her that the" harassing trolls" were actually the efforts of one member with serious emotional issues who literally spent all day monitoring the forum, ready to pounce on any new post. The forum was his only focus and whole world apparently. This is actually pretty sad.

After I read this thread earlier today, I messaged her at work today and asked her if she ever went back to this forum. She told me it no longer exists but she had gone back about a year after she stopped posting there and the same member was still there and was still all over every comment.

One good thing did come from this thread, I reconnected with a coworker and we are grabbing lunch together tomorrow. Trust me, we won't be discussing that forum. smile

Before FSM we had that FILMUS-L list service where a great deal of of potent film music was discussed in greater and some of the serious and old collectors were there and then FSM came and basically took over as the new nexus.

I still visit and try to use Bernard Herrmann Talking and Jerry Goldsmith Online forum but these are relatively less active.

Maintitles.net? Here I come..!

Maintitles.net? Here I come..!

You're very welcome, Amer, and won't regret it. Besides being the best film music forum on the net, the activity is also manageable, so it doesn't "swallow" a lot of time from other boards or internet activity.
