The latest CD from Quartet is the first-ever release of Elmer Bernstein's score for CLASS, the 1983 college sex comedy which starred Jacqueline Bisset and Rob Lowe as mother and son and introduced Andrew McCarthy, and which reunited Bernstein with his Great Santini director, Lewis John Carlino.

Caldera is releasing the score for the 1980 film version of Agatha Christie's THE MIRROR CRACK'D, directed by Guy Hamilton (Goldfinger). From the producers of Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, this Christie adaptation starred Angela Lansbury as Miss Marple, with a supporting cast of Golden Age greats including Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis and Kim Novak, plus James Fox and Geraldine Chaplin. The score was composed by Touch of Class Oscar nominee John Cameron, and the mystery is based on a real-life tragedy that befell a Golden Age star. (I've wanted the scores for Class and The Mirror Crack'd for over 40 years, so for me this is a great week to be a soundtrack collector).

The latest release from La-La Land is an expanded edition of Hans Zimmer's score for director Ridley Scott's 1991 surprise hit THELMA & LOUISE, starring Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis. The CD is expected to ship in late May.

Music Box has announced two new releases for French comedies directed by Philippe Clair -- Alan Silvestri's score for 1984's PAR OU T’ES RENTRE… ON T’A PAS VU SORTIR, (aka How Did You Get In? We Didn't See You Leave), starring Jerry Lewis and Connie Neilsen; and Armando Trovajoli's score for 1982's PLUS BEAU QUE MOI TU MEURS.

Having released Benjamin Wallfisch's score for ALIEN: ROMULUS on vinyl, the Mutant label has just announced a CD release of the score, currently expected in late June. They will also be releasing score and song CDs and LPs for Ryan Coogler's just released horror musical blockbuster SINNERS, scored by two-time Oscar winner Ludwig Goransson.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

DROP - Bear McCreary

"Sometimes, small-screen actors lose a bit of what makes them special when they jump to the big one. But that is absolutely not the case with Fahy, who has a striking immediacy here. If we don’t buy what Violet is going through, if we start questioning the admittedly convoluted machinations of the thriller plot machine, then 'Drop' would fall. Fahy never lets that happen, and Landon smartly recognizes his greatest asset, rarely leaving her side. We become her partners in this nightmare, as uncertain of who is torturing her, why this is happening, or how to get out of it. The director of 'Happy Death Day' and 'Freaky' leaves most of the humor of those films behind to pivot to something more grounded, but he also never takes himself too seriously. He’s a talented director, and he works with talented collaborators -- especially editor Ben Baudhuin and the great composer Bear McCreary -- to present a cohesive vision that never takes itself too seriously but thrills, nonetheless."

Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com

"One aggravating visual tic is that most of the male characters are photocopies of each other, a stack of handsome men with sandy brown goatees. I can’t be the only person who initially mistook Henry and Blake as the same guy and assumed the brutal opening flashback was actually a flash-forward. For clarity’s sake, couldn’t one of them have shaved? Maybe -- maybe -- the misdirection is on purpose. I’m dubious. In another pivotal moment, Violet scribbles a message that seems to be a big deal according to the tense and pounding score. But even in a close-up, I couldn’t make out what it read."

Amy Nicholson, Los Angeles Times

THE PENGUIN LESSONS - Federico Jusid

"While familiar territory for Pope and Coogan, it’s a return for director Peter Cattaneo to the politically tinged personal drama of his breakout work on 'The Full Monty.' Initially, those heavier intentions are hindered in part by an obnoxiously jaunty score by Federico Jusid, but as those historical undertones become a predominant theme in the narrative, his string-based compositions move to the piano and become more discordant and disturbing. The plight of the school cleaner (El Jaber) and her granddaughter Sofia (Carrocio), and the number of people who disappear daily under the new military junta, move ever more to the fore. For British and Argentinian audiences, there’s the added political tension that only six years later Michell would have been expelled or detained as the two countries went to war over the Falkland -- a remote series of Atlantic islands where the penguin population outweighs the humans by roughly 300 to 1."
