Intrada has just released a new edition of one of Jerry Goldsmith's favorites of his own scores, the 1977 Hemingway adaptation ISLANDS IN THE STREAM, from director Franklin J. Schaffner (Planet of the Apes, Patton, The Boys from Brazil), featuring the same tracks as Film Score Monthly's 2010 release of the score but with remastered sound.

The latest releases from Buysoundtrax and its related labels are a second volume of scores from the cable TV noir anthology series FALLEN ANGELS, music by Peter Bernstein, for episodes directed by John Dahl, Agnieszka Holland, Tim Hunter, Michael Lehmann, Jim McBride, Steven Soderbergh and Kiefer Sutherland; THE PAUL CHIHARA COLLECTION VOL 6, featuring cues from several of his scores including the underrated sci-fi horror film Impulse and Sidney Lumet's Oscar-nominated The Morning After; and scores for two short films composed by Jeff Rona, OCEANUS and PARALLEL MAN.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

ABSOLUTION - Kaspar Kaae

"'Absolution” also has melancholy cinematography from top to bottom, which is tonally appropriate even though it has no energy. Neeson does have an affair with an extremely nice woman, named only Woman (Yolonda Ross, 'The Chi'), and he has one positive afternoon with his grandson, but otherwise, there’s nothing to be happy about. Even the film’s plodding, tedious score has an annoying recurring buzzing noise that sounds exactly like your vibrating cell phone, which manages to be atmospherically oppressive while also taking you out of the film entirely. Sure, Liam Neeson is having a moment, but that could be your mom calling. You can’t assume it’s not. It might be important."

William Bibbiani, The Wrap

"Using many of the same key collaborators from that 2014 film -- notably DP Philip Ogaard, production designer Jorgen Stangebye Larsen and composer Kaspar Kaae -- Moland delivers a sharp-looking, well-paced movie with a moody score."

David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

DAHOMEY - Wally Badarou, Dean Blunt

"Throughout 'Dahomey,' Diop uses every tool available to her to translate a multitude of emotions at any given time. The score is of particular note, from early scenes with an airy, harp-heavy chime, enhancing the fragile beauty of the statues and the extreme care needed to protect them. Then, the music descends into a synth-heavy tune, creating an ’80s sci-fi feel. It pairs quite well with the voiceover, as it really does sound like Darth Vader. It’s most certainly a choice to have the voice sound so far away from humans, and it definitely alienates and unsettles the audience from the narrator, and distracts from the beautiful language being spoken and thoughts being expressed. A more natural voice that would allow audiences to appreciate the vernacular and accent of this region and feel more connected to the narrator probably would've made for a more enthralling watch."

Emma Kiely, Collider

"At just over an hour, Diop’s strange, captivating and rigorously intellectual film leaves a mighty impression well beyond its compact length. Joséphine Drouin-Viallard’s intimately attentive cinematography leads us from meditative darkness up to the stars and back to earth in the glorious sunshine illuminating Benin’s magnificently attired citizens. Musing on destiny, place and belonging, it spans centuries in the blink of a statue’s eye. Composers Wally Badarou and Dean Blunt’s heartful score rumbles like that statue’s call in a film as rich in ideas as any king’s treasure."

Stephen A. Russell, Time Out

"The voice emanates from the artifact labeled '26,' a statue of Dahomey’s King Ghézo. In a stacked sound of multiple voices speaking at once, the statue vocalizes grievances in its native Fon language (also known as Dahomean). Poetic ruminations on imprisonment in a foreign land and yearning for a home that may no longer exist are supported by Wally Badarou and Dean Blunt’s entrancing synth score. Their alluring compositions sonically resemble the wonder of discovery with a hint of trepidation at the unknown."

Carlos Aguilar, Los Angeles Times

"Words delivered in the low rumble of Ghezo’s voice suggest the disorientation of emerging from 'the kingdom of night' into a place 'far removed from the country I saw in my dreams.' Imaginative use of electronic music by Wally Badarou and Dean Blunt, who hail from Beninese and Nigerian roots, respectively, amplifies the mythical and spiritual aspects of travel across centuries."

David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

ELEVATION - H. Scott Salinas

"Making his fourth directorial feature after contributing to the screenplays of 'The Bourne Ultimatum' and 'Ocean’s Twelve,' among others, Nolfi maximizes medium-scale resources to give 'Elevation' a fairly expansive feel. Cinematographer Shelly Johnson takes full widescreen advantage of the magnificent Colorado scenery, while visual effects supervisor Nathan McGuinness’ nasty four-legged nemeses are seen enough to satisfy, albeit mostly held in eye-blink reserve by editor Joel Viertel. H. Scott Salinas’ big orchestral score also helps pump up a movie whose global-crisis premise is somewhat belied by the relative modesty of onscreen spectacle."

Dennis Harvey, Variety

EXHIBITING FORGIVENESS - Jherek Bischoff

"Featuring an elegiac, plaintive, and melancholy score by Jherek Bischoff, reminiscent of the affecting works of Emile Mosseri (and we mean that as the highest compliment), 'Exhibiting Forgiveness' has so many tools at its disposal to make this soulful, sophisticated drama soar, including beautifully crafted naturalistic cinematography by Lachlan Milne ('Minari')."

Rodrigo Perez, The Playlist

"All of these ideas -- as well as matters of grief, inheritance, masculinity, and more -- make their way into Kaphar’s portrait of an artist. And yet, for all its thematic heft, 'Exhibiting Forgiveness' moves lightly, using Tarrell’s paintings like chapter breaks to help it glide between scenes. This airy quality is enhanced by Jherek Bischoff’s score, its delicate mixture of keys and strings offering the perfect mixture of wistfulness and melancholy. It’s like that early scene between Tarrell and Aisha in reverse, watching one of his paintings translated into music."

Ross McIndoe, Slant Magazine

HIGH TIDE - Sebastian Plano

"But the film gets back on track in its satisfying final stretch, notably in the tender goodbye between Lourenço and Maurice, an exchange so nervous but loaded with feeling that it’s easy to forgive the visual cliché of Oscar Ignacio Jiménez’s camera whirling around them over and over in an extended arc shot. It’s a slightly flashy flourish in a film otherwise characterized by the graceful simplicity of its visuals, which are complemented by Sebastian Plano’s elegant string score."

David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

JUROR #2 - Mark Mancina

"As Faith’s faith in her own case begins to crumble (perhaps inevitably, as 'faith in justice' is her slick, conservative-sounding slogan of choice), Eastwood’s film leans into a series of convenient and increasingly silly story beats. Elsewhere, even though other characters aren’t without their own problems (Justin’s wife, Zoey Deutch’s Ally, is still reeling from a devastating miscarriage the year prior), they’re more sounding boards than solid persons. How these and other characters seem to exist only to help push the narrative forward gives Juror #2, which is blandly scored and almost defined by its non-specificity, the feel of a 'Law & Order' episode."

Greg Nussen, Slant Magazine

MISTER ORGAN - Lachlan Anderson

"The banal insidiousness of it all began to fill me with a type of nameless dread. Backed up by a droning, unsettling score, 'Mister Organ' begins to seem like a horror movie. Organ himself seems harmless, at least physically. But he exudes a certain temperament that appears slightly off. Why is he doing any of this? Does he even realize he's doing it? Or does he believe his own stories?"

Chris Evangelista, Slashfilm

"Frequently intriguing -- if never quite as tense as Lachlan Anderson’s pulse-pounding electronic score might want you to believe -- 'Mister Organ' works best as a first-hand forensic analysis of what it’s like when a sociopath locks their sights on you. Whatever his role in enabling (or at least encouraging) Organ’s behavior, the resolutely sane Farrier is a perfect foil for his latest nemesis; the bit in which Organ reveals that he has a key to Farrier’s house is an incredible study of derangement and reasonability colliding on camera."

David Ehrlich, IndieWire

"We are free to draw conclusions about Organ’s mental wellbeing (but discouraged from doing so) in that fashion. What we’re invited to do is consider how many Michael Organs there are out in the world, appearing innocuous but later revealing their insidiousness; implanting themselves in tight-knit communities and gutting them of core members; playing with people’s lives for no apparent reason except amusement and entitlement; thriving materially off other people’s labor and luck. The music throughout helps maintain the eerie vibe. Farrier’s natural affinity for expressing anguish and anxiety through cringes and grimaces -- as seen in 'Dark Tourist' -- lends to the emotional impact. The interviews with those Organ has affected give 'Mister Organ' more weight, imploring us not just to judge an individual but to look at the consequences of patterns of action, to see how they can affect others."
