DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?
NIGHTBITCH - Nate Heller
"Her encounters with three other mothers she meets at the library’s Book Babies circle (led in song by the film’s inventive composer and the director’s brother, Nate Heller) are more satisfying. At first, she rolls her eyes and scoffs inwardly at the simplistic thought that the commonalities of being moms should make her enjoy the company of other moms. But as she gets to know Jen (Zoë Chao), Miriam (Mary Holland) and Liz (Archana Rajan), they drop subtle clues that there could be something more to them than their designated parenting roles."
David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
WICKED - Stephen Schwartz (songs); John Powell & Stephen Schwartz (score)
"For most of those audiences who grew up on this version of Oz, delivered through Stephen Schwartz’s delicious, rhythmically inventive songs and Winnie Holzman’s astonishingly propulsive book, Jon M. Chu’s two-part film adaptation will likely make those heart handprints glow bright. Just like Chu’s exuberant screen version of 'In The Heights,' the first part captures the spirit of the original, a strange concoction of whimsical fairy tale and dystopian thriller, with lavishly staged musical numbers scampering over lushly rendered landscapes. And as the central enemies-to-besties, the green-skinned Elphaba and pink-draped Glinda, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande are alchemically eruptive together."
Dan Rubins, Slant Magazine
"In fact, if there’s one deeper frustration with 'Wicked' it’s that the already boisterous score by Schwartz is amplified with additional instrumentation to the point of glossing over many of the most exceptional elements, the counterpunctual punches landing like a thud with the overproduced, glossy recording. Some of the percussive elements of the original stage recording are subsumed into the desire to hire more musicians, to create a bigger orchestra, all for maximalism rather than effectiveness. Frankly, stripping most of this stuff away to merely rehearsal piano (as per some of the behind the scenes footage) may be a more than welcome supplement should the producers of the home video release be looking for suggestions."
Jason Gorber, Paste Magazine
"If you're already a fan of the musical, you'll probably be happy with the painstaking job that director John M Chu ('Crazy Rich Asians,' 'In the Heights') has done in transferring it to the silver screen. There's a slick screenplay by Winnie Holzman and Dana Fox, the songs by Stephen Schwartz are big and rousing, and you can tell that armies of craftspeople have laboured for days over every wig, embroidered jacket, and decoration on the colourful, gleamingly artificial set. The two leads are well cast, too. Erivo is disarmingly sweet and vulnerable, while retaining a hint of latent menace, and Grande-Butera, who can hit notes so high that only dogs can hear them, is amusing as a blithely perky narcissist. She would have been an interesting Barbie if Margot Robbie hadn't played the role."
Nicholas Barber, BBC.com
"In the film, the payoff of 'Defying Gravity' -- albeit a little more overdramatic and slightly messier than it should have been -- is earned. There’s so much momentum in the music, in the speed of Elphaba racing through Oz on her broomstick, in the gravity of events that have just transpired, that by the time the big -To Be Continued…- message pops up, it’s pretty enthralling. Maybe a 15-minute intermission is better than an entire year, but hey, that’s showbiz for you."
Paolo Ragusa, Consequence
"I’ll admit, I would have enjoyed 'Wicked' a lot more if I were a bigger fan of the songs. But aside from a couple of high points, such as the immortal anthem of rebellion 'Defying Gravity,' that ubiquitous, tinny faux-pop Broadway beat turns me off instantly. Luckily, the songs don’t need my blessing. They’ve endured long enough that the studio has planned sing-along screenings across the country for later in December. And when Chu does sink his teeth into the numbers, something wonderful can emerge. The film’s performance of 'What Is This Feeling?', a showstopper in which our two heroes express their initial loathing of each other, seems to glide effortlessly from late-night split-screen bickering to a rollicking, school-wide extravaganza where everything becomes rhythm: click-clacking silverware, twiddling fingers, stomping feet, rolling chairs, and screeching tables. This is clearly the work of the magnificent madman who made two 'Step Up' movies."
Bilge Ebiri, New York
"The story, loosely adapted from Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel 'Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West', is essentially a prequel to 1939’s Technicolor classic 'The Wizard Of Oz.' It cleverly imagines how The Good Witch Of The North and The Wicked Witch Of The West ('I’ll get you my pretty!') gained their contrasting reputations by taking us back to their school days. Stephen Schwartz’s songs are pithy even when they have big theatre kid energy: one is called ‘Popular’ and another pivots on the phrase 'loathing, unadulterated loathing!' There’s also minimal schmaltz in the screenplay co-credited to Winnie Holtzman, creator of seminal teen series 'My So-Called Life,' who also wrote the stage musical."
