Music Box is releasing a newly expanded version of Georges Delerue's score for Philippe DeBroca's 1965 comic adventure LES TRIBULATIONS D'UN CHINOIS EN CHINE (also known as Chinese Adventures in China and Up to His Ears), inspired by the Jules Verne story which also, strangely enough, inspired Warren Beatty's Bulworth. They have also re-released their CD of Delerue's music for the 1991 documentary series TOURS DU MONDE TOURS DU CIEL, paired with his string quartet Premier quartuor a cordes.

DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

BLUEBACK - Nigel Westlake

"An inspiring, strings-centric score by Nigel Westlake plus a nice cover-version use of the 1980s-era, Crowded House hit 'Don’t Dream It’s Over,' are bonuses."

Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times

"But where sensibility fails, sense takes over. The dives and landscape shots are gorgeous, silent beyond Nigel Westlake’s aptly emotional orchestral score. Newcomer Fogg, who is in a majority of scenes as teenage Abby, is lovely. And Mitchell, who grounds every film lucky enough to have her, is a force as strong as any Dora aims to protect."

Elizabeth Weitzman, The Wrap

A GOOD PERSON - Bryce Dessner

"Beautifully photographed in suitably autumnal fashion by DP Mauro Fiore in unglamorous New Jersey locations and effectively scored by Bryce Dessner of the rock band The National, the film, in any case, marks Braff’s most assured work since his award-winning 'Garden State' nearly 20(!) years ago."

Frank Scheck, The Hollywood Reporter

A THOUSAND AND ONE - Gary Gunn

"It’s also long. Running at 116 minutes, the modestly operatic narrative initially surges on Gary Gunn’s sweeping score and Erik K Yue’s breathtaking photography, which uniquely wraps us in the warm glow of the 1990s. The film then lurches ahead: Inez’s boyfriend Lucky (Will Catlett), Terry’s father, returns from prison. The trio attempt to form a family, and in another movie, their journey in this period would morph into a feel-good story about overcoming adversity by loving one another. Life, unfortunately, isn’t so simple. Rockwell opts for a kind of realism that feels more truthful; and yet, is without a tight rhythm."

Robert Daniels, The Playlist

"It’s clear the film has displacement on its mind long before Inez stands on the sidewalk, skeptically eyeing a new white neighbor. But the characters come first, and impassive economic forces become only the latest in a line of threats to their existence rather than the film’s thematic center. The score, by Gary Gunn, quivers with anticipation rather than foreboding. Rockwell does sometimes rush things -- there’s a thread about the misogynoir that teen Terry absorbs from the atmosphere around him, for instance, that could have been its own chapter. Yet 'A Thousand and One' is rich and complex overall, the saga of someone battling to build a family and a stable home with no real experience of what that looks like. 'Where are your people?' a woman Inez is trying to rent a room from asks her, and while we know that she bounced from foster care to group homes to shelters, nothing prepares you for her plaintive admission that 'I lost them,' as though she’d been tumbled through systems long enough for any connections to be buffed away."

Alison Willmore, New York

"'A Thousand and One' hums with familiarity and warmth for its setting and characters, which is one reason it’s such an affecting and engrossing family melodrama. Eric Yue’s gorgeous cinematography and Gary Gunn’s score reflect this nicely, inviting us into this family’s world no matter the time. Even the way the film uses audio of different mayors and news anchors outlining awful policies highlights the obstacles ahead for the family, grounding the film in their reality. Their film delivers on the audiences' investment in tender, quiet moments the characters share with each other, whether it be heart-to-heart conversations between Lucky and Terry or scenes of everyday life in the neighborhood."

Alejandra Martinez, The Austin Chronicle

"One of the many things that sets 'A Thousand and One' apart from other, similarly tough-minded stories of urban struggle, poverty and marginalization can be felt practically from the start, as director A.V. Rockwell introduces Inez (R’n’B performer and choreographer Teyana Taylor) walking the pavement along a painted brick wall in early-’90s Harlem. The way composer Gary Gunn’s symphonic music swells and swirls on the soundtrack, and the way the camera gazes up at her from below as it tracks her purposeful stride, give this ordinary woman, whom we already know has only recently been released from Rikers Island, a heroic kind of dignity."

Jessica Kiang, Variety

"There’s a meandering quality to A Thousand and One that at times makes it feel slightly underpowered and overlong. But the drama is fully inhabited and its relationships drawn with love and compassion for the characters’ failings as much as their hopes, qualities enhanced by Gary Gunn’s mellow score."

David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
