DID THEY MENTION THE MUSIC?

EL PLANETA - Chicken [Burke Battelle]

"Ulman boasts a keen sense of visual ingenuity, filming in gorgeous but never tawdry black and white and shooting long takes broken up by dreamy transitions. The costume design is also nothing short of an indulgent treat for the viewer, even including the occasional Zara tag sprinkled in for laughs. The score by an artist credited only as Chicken is artful and perfectly moody, another high-point in the production of an otherwise minimalist film."

Natalia Keogan, Paste Magazine

"Because Ulman pulls off such a delicate tonal balance for the majority of 'El Planeta,' it makes you wish she hadn’t relied so heavily on stylistic quirks. Intentionally cheesy wipes between scenes are a distraction, and the whimsically plinky score from Chicken feels at odds with the stripped-down simplicity of the visuals. Still, Ulman is taking risks, which is exciting, and it bodes well for the next depressing/amusing story she wants to tell. And hopefully she’ll let her mom tag along again, too."

Christy Lemire, RogerEbert.com

"Using playful screen wipes to mark the scene transitions and a tonally appropriate plinky-plonky score by DJ Burke Battelle, who composes under the name Chicken, the film strings together vignettes from María and Leo’s unstructured days and nights."

David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter

THE FRENCH DISPATCH - Alexandre Desplat

"The craft is, even by his exceptional standards, exceptional, from Mr. Alexandre Desplat‘s lovely musical compositions to Mr. Robert Yeoman‘s beautiful, often black and white, but often not photography, to the borderline heroic job done by the editor, Mr. Andrew Weisblum, who has taken all these pieces of assorted size and shape, plus the intertitles and animations and different moods and manic episodes, and somehow made the damn thing move like a whippet."

Jessica Kiang, The Playlist

"Each story is told with its own style, with Anderson utilizing animation, graphics, still lifes, visual puns, and gags, all held together by the thread of Alexandre Desplat's score, and Anderson's single-minded sense of mission."

Sheila O'Malley, RogerEbert.com

"Regular collaborators who make vital contributions include DP Robert Yeoman, his visuals mixing black and white with color and alive with all the trademark symmetries, skewed angles and careful compositions; and composer Alexandre Desplat, whose doodling piano themes help shape the jaunty tone."

David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
