"Because Kore-eda focuses on the minutiae of ordinary lives, his family dramas always risk shriveling into inconsequence, their wistful temperament sometimes hard to distinguish from sappiness. Composer Yoko Kanno’s piano-heavy arrangements lovingly underscore what occurs onscreen, although the music can occasionally tip over into mawkishness. And those familiar with Kore-eda’s recent films will recognize recurring themes of generational divide and romantic uncertainty."

"It’s perhaps his source material and its particular genre that make the film seem oddly mawkish by Kore-eda’s usual standards. Given his record, you would assume this to be an adult film about adult concerns -- it did, after all, compete in Cannes last year -- but on a stylistic level, at least, it seems partly to be playing to a younger audience, the readership of the original manga. Hence its playing up of immediate emotiveness both in its content and in a lush, assertively heart-lifting score by Yoko Kanno. Visually, the film easily flips into a register of youthful euphoria—as in the scene where Suzu is taken on a bike ride through a tunnel of white cherry blossoms as she tilts back her head in rapture. It’s no doubt also because of the manga series that certain, possibly familiar characters drop in and out, briefly giving hints of their biographies, but mainly passing through to give Suzu their blessing. Among them, a seafood café owner played by the character actor Lily Franky (he’s also seen in 'After the Storm' and Kore-eda’s 2013 'Like Father, Like Son') and best of all, livening up the film with her cantankerous presence, the doyenne Kirin Kiki as a testy but tender great aunt (she also steals the show in 'After the Storm' and brought a dash of edge to Naomi Kawase’s otherwise insipid 'Sweet Bean')."

"The movie's only false note is Koreeda's repeated use of swelling strings and schmaltzy piano to underscore the more touching moments; the storytelling and the performances are subtle and dignified, yet the soundtrack is trite and grating. Because Koreeda trusts the viewer to draw his own conclusions about the sisters in every other way, it's puzzling that he would fall back on a cheap, emotionally manipulative score. But the strings and ivories eventually fade, which allows the sisters' story to fill the room like the fragrances of opened jars."

"Craft contributions, as expected of a Kore-eda film, is superb in an entirely unostentatious way. Especially worth noting is Yoko Kanno’s music, whose dulcet melodies and classical edge has a softening effect on the helmer’s usually austere tone. Lenser Mikiya Takimoto ('Like Father, Like Son') captures the genteel charm of Kamakura while filtering out its more touristy spots; his pristine visuals, enhanced by an elegant color palette of blue, gray and olive, has none of the artificial glossiness suggested by his long career in commercials. However, some of the framing, notably the sisters’ upright poses and profile shots, strain to reference Ozu’s compositions. Kore-eda’s professed homage to the master of family drama (a longtime Kamakura resident) feels a little superficial compared with 'Still Walking,' which captures Ozu’s spirit rather than rigidly adhering to his technique."
