"This all sounds rather madcap, but the prevailing tone throughout the film is one of dripping schmaltz, enhanced by an overtly sentimental piano score that plays even over ostensibly comedic scenes. The script takes every opportunity it can to manufacture lessons about the importance of harmony between Muslims and Jews, and you can bet that any stereotype voiced by one of the characters will be disproven at some point. The preachiness adds to a general well-meaning but clueless vibe, like an elderly uncle performing a rap about staying in school for an audience of dumbstruck kids. Dough really does mean well: Pryce makes an excellent father figure, giving his scenes with Holder some real warmth, and who can disagree with an anti-racist message? But without any real laughs -- and with a number of logical gaps, paper-thin supporting characters, and tired gags -- ultimately viewers may feel like they’re just humoring the movie."

"The closest 'Gods of Egypt' gets to a credible relationship is the mismatched buddy-banter between Horus and Bek -- if, as to credibility, you're willing to overlook the fact that the actors bringing these two men of Egypt to life are Danish and Australian, respectively, part of a larger pattern in the cast for which Proyas apologized in November, long before the film's release. But Proyas' investment in world-building takes precedent over all other considerations anyway. In that respect, the film resembles George Lucas' airless 'Star Wars' prequels, which play around in an dazzling sandbox of visual effects, but seem incapable of communicating in language other than zeroes and ones. Many of the images in 'Gods of Egypt' would make for a fetching prog-rock album cover, but Proyas has populated his digital paradise with banal characters, cherry-picked mythology, and a score just a few notes off from 'Lawrence of Arabia.' Out of the old comes nothing new."

"First, however, Horus must address a few complications, such as the fact that his former squeeze, Hathor (Elodie Yung), is now bedding down with his nemesis; their love nest is strategically positioned next to a towering obelisk that underscores Set’s lust for conquest and his nagging infertility issues. Hathor, incidentally, is described in the production notes as 'the goddess of love, music and alcohol,' which means that she presumably would be in a position to do something about Marco Beltrami’s epically tumescent score, or at least to ensure that no one walks into 'Gods of Egypt' without a beer in hand. In a movie where the deities transform at will into winged, animal-headed Hasbro figurines, or where Geoffrey Rush’s white-robed sun god Ra reliably bursts into craptacular CG flames, the drinking games pretty much write themselves."

"'Risen,' about a Roman soldier searching for the resurrected Christ in the 40 days following the crucifixion, is an old-fashioned Biblical spectacular with fresh blood in its veins. As directed by Kevin Reynolds ('Waterworld,' 'Fandango') and co-written by Reynolds and Paul Aiello, you could program it in a triple feature with 'The Robe' and 'King of Kings.' It has battle sequences, CinemaScope images of scrub-dotted plains and hills, a swelling orchestral score by Roque Baños that sometimes evokes the late, great John Barry ('Out of Africa'), white English actors playing Romans, and actors of various nationalities and darker complexions playing Hebrews. The strategy works well until the second half, which resorts to pictorial cliches you associate with kitschy religious art and lets its story devolve into a series of clunky set-pieces."
