Its a competently made action adventure film with generally solid performances. I enjoyed the first half a lot more than the second half. Most of the creativity and interesting story elements took place during the origin segments of the film.
The film needed a better script. There's hardly any character building once Steve Rogers becomes Captain America. Rogers relationship with the various characters was lacking. I didn't feel a connection between him and his love interest or with his nemesis. He faced no real challenges once he started to lead missions. They easily infiltrated enemy bases and took care of Red Skulls army with ease. The action scenes were okay but didn't really thrill.
This maybe sacrilegious but I didn't like Silverstri's score or his theme for the title character. Captain America needed a big epic patriotic theme and what we got was lacking IMHO. This really hurt the film.
Some of the stuff with the Red Skull and his henchmen were silly and or confusing. Peggy Carter was way over the top with her badassery and heroics. I started to wonder if they even needed Captain America in the film. She seemed to be in almost every key scene regardless of the plot.
Interesting to note, Joe Johnson wanted to use the giant wing idea for the climax of The Rocketeer but budget cuts and or rewrites prevented him from using that in the film. On another side note I totally forgot Clara Oswald had a brief cameo in this film!
