It's fun reading through an old thread like this, from the early buzz, first clips and resulting disastrous marketing and box office performance, to Schiffy's now classic 'I wouldn't worry about missing out on this (CD)' advice wink
As 'famous' Jeff Bond says somewhere, I also see this film gaining love and esteem as the years pass.
The vitriol against it felt a bit hysterical at the time and crapping on it was just the way of the day.
I plan on revisiting this film with the kids in the near future.
Still love the score. Top 5 MG for me.

Everyone has their guilty pleasures. I'm sure its on Thor's all time top ten Sci-Fi list along with Blade Runner 1999.

Guilty pleasure...maybe.
But I also think it's a first rate piece of fantasy entertainment film-making.
Apart from it looking overly familiar, due to its (post) borrowed plot/characters/elements for ensuing filmed fantasies, it has top quality FX, design, photography and music and the leads are appealing, especially that Princess.

Definitely one of those films ridiculously bungled when it came to marketing. When we think of the cost of production, and THEN they wonder what they're going to do with it?? Beggars belief.

Did no one think of the uniqueness of the 'other' Edgar Rice Burroughs character that influenced LOADS of other cinema stuff? The trailer should have reeked of every influenced property PLUS!!!, from the creator of Tarzan, one of the biggest fictional characters of the 20th century. For God's sake who runs these f*****g companies...lol!

The final title of the movie alone of course says nothing. .......Of Mars might have made a little difference. Someone obviously thought it sounded funny or something.

Anyway they bungled it. After wasting how much money?? Again who's fault is that? Idiots whoever they are/were.

Keep in mind the director bungled something like a $100 million dollars. The film cost twice as much as it should've. It was his first attempt at directing a live action film and he was way out of his league. I can't blame Disney for pulling the advertising dollars early on. Cut their losses. It clearly wasn't going to succeed at the box office.

Yes, as noted in this thread, writing off the film was hardly noticeable to Disney. A minor blip.
When their whole film arm only accounts for about 7% of their money making, it was likely embarrassment and face lost that bothered them more.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film and likely always will.
There's a lot to like and admire in it (did I mention that Princess is Fit) smile
That's all that matters to me.
