Sorry, copied the wrong vol 1 tracks!

The second part of THE FUTURE is the Main Title, isn't it?

I wish I'd bought these way back when. Just figured they'd be around forever.

LIONHEART has a fantastic Jerry Goldsmith score. What a great decision Varese Sarabande made to release two CDs of the full score. Jerry often played the "Theme From Lionheart" in his concerts as an in memoriam tribute to his former colleague, Franklin Shaffner. He recorded that expanded concert version (4:03) for the "SUITES & THEMES" release with the Philharmonia Orchestra on Masters Film Music (SRS 2003) back in 1987. The CD is definitely worth picking up, if you don't already have it. The Lionheart cue (and the whole CD) is very well recorded and is my favorite performance of the theme. In the UK, the CD was released with different artwork and booklet as "THE SOUNDTRACKS OF JERRY GOLDSMITH WITH THE PHILHARMONIA" on Deram 820 757-2 (a Decca/London subsidiary). It was also issued on a Deram LP.

LIONHEART is available on DVD-R on demand from Warner Archives.
http://www.amazon.com/Lionheart-Eric-Stoltz/dp/B002ZG8PYU/ref=sr_1_3?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1320641359&sr=1-3

I snapped up a copy of the Laser Disc issue (Warner Home Video 35203) back when it was released. And, as an idle exercise in checking the film scenes versus the cues on the soundtrack CDs, I found that the length of some of the scenes in the early part of the film did not precisely match their corresponding cues on the CD. I presumed that the cut of the film that Jerry got to score was cut just a little bit further in post production before release and they just trimmed the score that they had to fit the final (105 min.) cut. And, as mentioned above, the cue "The Future" was not used and contains the in the film or the scene that it was meant to underscore was cut, and it was not included in the Japanese Volcano release (CPC8-5037) (complete score in film order) of the score. But it was included in the 2-CD Japanese issue of JERRY'S RECALL (SLCD-5010/5011) in 1993.

HERE'S ANOTHER EXAMPLE I JUST FOUND:
Out of curiosity, I just checked the Laser Disc for the End Credits version of the Lionheart theme. It runs 2:27 in the actual film. It was shortened for the film. The final CD cue ("King Richard") of the same scene has the Lionheart theme running at 3:47 - very close to the concert version. So they trimmed 1:20 from the original Goldsmith End Credits cue to fit the final film cut of the End Credits. By the way, the unused cue "The Future" ends with the expanded (3:50) version of the Lionheart theme, just as the "King Richard" cue does. So the preceding 1:55 of music may have been from an alternate ending scene that was not used.

FOR THE PURISTS AMONG YOU:
In "King Arthur," there is an overlapping cross-fade between the Lionheart theme and the score.
In "The Future," there is no such cross-fade.

If you go through the film and match the score, you can find little trims and cuts here and there.
We are so lucky to have the complete score on the CD releases.

Ron Burbella

So, to be "completely complete," you might want to throw in the concert version cue.

Vol.2-11 The Future is not used in Film.

Thanks

I used The Future as Track 1 to act as kind of an overture to the score. This is one hugely epic and richly thematic score from Goldsmith and to listen through the whole thing from beginning to end is a blast! Haven't seen the film in years but all I remember is that video that always shows up everywhere of Goldsmith adding the synth overlays to the fanfare from The Castle. "It's a little flat" hehe.

Like "The Future", "Final Fight" wasn't used in the film. What should matter is Jerry's original intended order when he wrote the cues to the original cut of the film (his score was later hacked up and multiple cues unused, and others barely used -- for example only the first half minute of "Robert and Blanche" was retained in the film). The Academy's Margaret Herrick Library has his original sketches and they give a pretty good idea of his original intentions, so we know where "The Future" should go (after trimming it down to 1:57 by removing the redundant music), and "The Castle" was apparently supposed to be the original opening cue before a cut version of the End Credits piece was tracked in over the opening:

Actually there's a scene in the film where a fortune teller reads the future in some tarot cards. I'm pretty sure the music was written for that scene. Mood and length match pretty well. In that case "The Future" would belong between "Robert and Blanche" and "Children in Bondage".

Just a personal anecdote. I acquired the Lionheart soundtrack at the beginning of my sophomore year in college, when I was taking a course in Medieval literature. Goldsmith's score made for a particularly fine accompaniment when reading my Chaucer and Chrétien de Troyes.

In fact, to this day it reminds more of my college reading list that it does the actual film!

Just listened again to The Future. It seems pretty hard to get the cue clean since it's crossfaded into the end credits.

I just did it.

There's some space between the tracks, can be easy splited.

There's no clean break. There's a very slight overlap on the fade out. It's possible to get a smooth fade out by reaching a second or two back in the cue - but it's not "easy".

Really? I found it easy. There isn't even a crossfade, The Future ends and then the End Title starts.

It was easy to split both.

Which edition of the score do you have. Do they differ?

I have the two different volumes, The Future is on 2.

Don't know if it is different from the one volume mash up...

I have the same volume 1 and 2 but the tremolo string fade from The Future bleeds into the End Titles.
