Do you ever think that the HTD complete score and/or complete soundtrack will ever be released. I love this score and those cheesy 80s Cherry Bomb songs. Would love to see this released. Has anyone ever heard any rumors etc?

After THE BLACK HOLE I don't think anything is impossible. I certainly hope HOWARD THE DUCK gets a release, it's a fine score.

I have the LP release and my copy is going to be signed (by the actor who played Howard) at the Scandinavian Sci-Fi Convention this upcoming weekend.

I would love to have this expanded and on cd!

Growing up in Pittsburgh, I remember going to the now-defunct Record-Rama (which at the time had a huge soundtrack selection), and searching for Howard the Duck on cd.

The guys at the counter said it wasn't available, but that I could pay to have a cassette copy made for personal use. My parents got me that and A View to A Kill (this was back before the Bond rereleases) for Christmas that year. I was in heaven!

Now that I think about it, was it legal for Record-Rama to do that? Probably not.

_______________

I've also thought the love theme from Howard the Duck was very similar to a Tiomkin theme found in "A President's Country", but maybe that is just me.

Ha ha!

I *HATE* the film!

As a score ... well when I first heard THE GOLDEN CHILD, I thought: Hey, this is HOWARD THE DUCK's big brother. Except it's way better too!

(No insult to HOWARD, but I do think THE GOLDEN CHILD is the better score.)

I think the score is fine and would certainly snap up a release.

Is it possible?

Well, someone said "After THE BLACK HOLE anything is possible". Actually I think it's more THE GOLDEN CHILD that makes HOWARD THE DUCK seem possible.

Cheers

If a release is ever possible, I hope it also includes the additional scoring by Sylvester Levay (including the music heard during the ultralight airplane chase).

It's definitely a sign of the times when most grails are basically released, you guys are down to Howard the Duck big grin

I hope it is released... John Barry's score was a lot of fun... and the music for Jeffrey Jones' "Dark Overlord" role is quite stunning. The film... hey, it was a dumb, expensive time filler with impressive effects and a great score.

It's very watchable, I know it's not good ( a bit of an understatement ) but it is watchable, and weirdly enjoyable, Jeffrey Jones is the star turn.

An excellent John Barry score which suffers a similar stigma to that of his "The Black Hole."

I have the LP release and my copy is going to be signed (by the actor who played Howard) at the Scandinavian Sci-Fi Convention this upcoming weekend.

Would that be Chip Zien (Howard's voice) or Ed Gale (Howard's onscreen presence)? Of course there were several puppeteers but these two men did such a wonderful job of making Howard real. I do like the movie, and I found the DVD making-of documentaries to be quite interesting. Chip Zien has been a favorite of mine since I saw him as The Baker in Into the Woods on PBS.

It's very watchable...

I also enjoyed the John Barry score but, at this point, I feel it is my duty to post a picture of Lea Thompson getting into bed with the duck -- a highlight of my movie-going youth. You're welcome.

This movie isn't nearly as bad as people think it is. Like a lot of 80's special-effects comedies, it's overproduced, overlong and just plain...over, but it has it's charms, from the excellent ILM effects to Lea Thompson at her hottest to Jeffrey Jones' droll performance to, of course, John Barry's lovely score. I can think of a lot of mega-blockbuster, Oscar-winning movies I'd rather watch less than Howard The Duck.

I think this score is underrated. Barry provided some beautiful, laid-back jazz cues for many parts of the film and an effective "hero" theme for the duck that had the composer in one of his rare, faster tempo moments (in the context of his style of the decade, at least).
The movie, however, is really one of the very worst ever made. I thought criticism was exaggerated until I saw the film myself (although, yes, "so bad they're good" moments abound for sure).
An expanded release of the score would be great and a sure seller considering the cult following the film has developed.

I like the score a lot (and really dislike most of Barrys stuff) and I actually like the movie too.

Sure, it is lame in parts and the duck just doesn't work at all (although the facial expressions are pretty well executed) but I actually think bits of it are actually good fun - the Dark Overlord especially ("she took my eggs" is a great line) and I always thought Men In Black's baddie bug ripped of Jeffrey Jones' performance in Howard.

And of course the film had the ever-hot Lea Thompson running around in skimpy underwear, which would make any film watchable.

Its interesting that people always cite this film as George Lucas' turkey (pun intended) which is really unfair because he only produced it, plus it is infinately superior in every way to Indiana Jones & The Valley Of The Crystal Sucks... sorry, Skull. Heck, even Lea Thompson's perfectly dimpled bum wouldn't have improved that film.

I am glad to see this thread. I made the comment about HOWARD THE DUCK in THE LEGEND OF THE LONE RANGER thread. I hope all of BARRY'S music gets a proper release but have been playing both of these much lately. I am not sure how much music is missing from the two films but it would be great to have complete releases on CD for the first time. If there is not much music missing, it would make for a great two scores on one CD. If I am not mistaken, (and I may be), I think both LP's were released on MCA.

The film is...well, it's a fascinating watch. I have a VHS tape hanging around the house somewhere from when I was 12. Love Lea Thompson, Jeffrey Jones and Tim Robbins, love the Thomas Dolby songs, love the Dark Overlord, but can't stand the very lame comedy - especially the more slapstick moments, which drag the film way down.

But that score...ba-da-bah, ba-da-ba-ba-baahh...I would love to have a pristine version of that theme on CD. The jazzier parts are lovely, but I think they're in the wrong movie - nothing wrong with the music itself though.

So yes, I'd snap a up release - though it would be great if Sylvester Levay, Thomas Dolby and Cherry Bomb were along for the ride.
