This just sounds like one of the best scores of the year! The trailer to the movie is really great too. Looking very much forward to this one. The movies Del Toro has produced so far, were really good!

Zoiks! This sounds really rather good indeed! Definitely one to look out for - I'll have a Google at the trailer in a second...

I was playing the album last night, and it's a rare case of a recent album,
especially for a horror score, that I didn't cut off after 5 or so cues.
I actually played the whole thing, and you know what? It's really good! One
of the best things Beltrami has done! Nice to hear some strong melody in a
horror score, and no overdoes on clangy stingers. I thought I read that Daniel
Schweiger put together a killer temp on this, and I can hear echoes of cool
scores like The Mephisto Waltz, Alien, The Fury, but not copies, just very faint
echoes and direction.

Worth a listen!!!!!

Totally agree. I was just listening to this yesterday and thinking that no-one had really mentioned it here yet. Really nice score and I'm not really a huge Marco fan. All credit of course to Mr Sanders as well. Great use of the lullaby theme and some beautifully creepy moments. Also nice to hear a horror score that doesn't fall apart during the action moments.
Is this getting a cd release or is it download only?

You are welcome sir! I really hope a lot of people look into the Don't Be Afraid of the Dark score -- it really is brilliant and a totally fresh horror perspective from the seasoned horror veteran Beltrami. Considering how many horror films the man has done, to be able to still breathe new life into the genre really is remarkable. Buck Sanders' work here just takes it up to a whole new level.

I also have heard the Thing score, and trust me when I say people are definitely gonna want to check that one out! The main "Thing/monster breath" theme is mesmerizingly creepy in its simplicity and there are some truly epic passages.

I can't take credit for this, but a user name Machionic made this alternate front cover based on the early poster art:

The art is actually done by first-time director Troy Nixey, who is also a professional illustrator.

I'll say that Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is absolutely the most Goldsmith-sounding score I've heard from Beltrami or any other composer in the past ten years. I just kind of noticed it...the orchestrations, the instrumentation, the strong thematic aspect, the powerful brass, the soft choir (not to mention the use of the echoplex that Goldsmith made so famous with Patton and Alien)...it all feels very Goldsmith in the 70's vein, or could be a more orchestral approach to his score to The Haunting.

I hasted to add that although Beltrami and Sanders' Don't Be Afraid of the Dark has a strong Goldsmith flavor to it, it is still clearly a Beltrami and Sanders score through and through. You will listen to it and be blown over by the structure, originality, and accomplished composition these two composers have created.

Thanks Deputy...

Have not seen you on here in a while. Your comments were sorely missed. Welcome back. Cannot wait to get this score.

The score actually reminded me more of Christopher Young than of Goldsmith (though, to be fair, Goldsmith was clearly a big influence on Young, especially in Young's early scores), and it was much more melodic than I expected -- considering that none of the reviews I scanned for "Did They Mention the Music" even mentioned the score, I was surprised how tuneful and foreground the score was.

I also enjoyed the film a lot -- it's nice to see a horror film shot by a great, underrated DP like Oliver Stapleton (The Cider House Rules, The Grifters) -- and I thought the film's tragic element was very effective.

On the other hand, am I the only one hugely disappointed to learn that Shark Night 3D is PG-13? I was hoping for something that would like Piranha 3D look like Up.

Join the club. Can't imagine why this would be (actually, I can; PG-13 means more green...that rhyme was unintentional, BTW).

I always loved Beltrami's score for Hellboy (especially the expanded version is very nice)... I don't know Buck Sanders (yet)... so in what extend did Sanders bring his own voice into this new score? Anyone has any idea? Did they compose together each track?

Awesome! Thanks for these comments fellas. I can't wait to get this score and I think I will be using the artwork above when I import the disc into iTunes.

Buck Sanders has practically worked on nearly every score Beltrami has composed. He originally programmed synthesizers for Marco but has also provided additional music on a lot of the scores. I think his work has become more prevalent in such films as Max Payne and The Hurt Locker and Beltrami has expanded his role and they seem to be working now as a team.

I saw the movie in a theater last Saturday and I was SO impressed by the score. Loved the movie, but the music was the best thing about it. In fact, I don't have a high opinion of modern film music in general, but I'd go so far as to say it's one of the best recent scores I've ever heard -- if not THE best. It is lush, melodious, and moving. It really enhanced the movie in a way that most new scores just do not. Twenty minutes in, I was convinced I HAD to buy the soundtrack while being surprised that it was Beltrami, who I don't normally care for (at least what I've heard). Can't wait for it to be released!

Damn, went to order the physical CD through Amazon but I see it's not available until September 27! Bollocks. Beltrami is one of the few composers (along with Zimmer, Bear McCreary and the occasional Desplat) that I'll go out of my way for a physical copy. I guess the iTunes version will have to do until then. Purchasing now -- can't wait to give it a listen.

Two listens so far, and dare I say this is my favorite score of the year so far! Beautiful stuff, I can sense the influence of both Chris Young and Goldsmith, but like was said earlier this is truly an original work of Beltrami and Sanders.

There's an interview with Marco Beltrami and Buck Sanders online you can listen to. The talk about Scream 4, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and The Thing.
