YIPPEE! This completes my Bernstein collection, as this was the one holdout
and one of my most cherished grails. Great Americana score to a great movie.

I don't remember the score, but oh how I wish they still made movies like THE GREAT SANTINI. It is classic.

Excellent! Thanks for this!

Interesting to see the Watertower Music logo on the back there... I wonder if the 1500 limit was dictated by Watertower, or if it's just what Lukas thinks this might sell...

Very good news! Nobody did this sort of thing better than Elmer Bernstein.

Glad to see this. It was a fine little film when it concentrated on the family dynamics of Duvall, Danner, and O'Keefe (all excellent), but suffered from overemphasis on rednecks and racial violence. South Carolina's problems were real and doubtless germane to Pat Conroy's youth, but the movie treatment threw things off balance. The film almost didn't get released. The company didn't know what a treasure they had and was deeply afraid of the title. To be honest, it does sound rather like a circus act or (to New Yorkers) a moving company. For a while it was going to be The Ace, but that didn't communicate much either. The revised main title music provides further evidence of indecision. It sounds as if Bernstein was onto something with his original "mystique" prelude, but evidently somebody wanted more conventional military bluster in his Great Escape manner. In the event, the credits were printed over shots of jet fighters and pilot banter, so there was no chance for subtlety.

I can't remember a single thing about the music except that when I saw the movie in the theater over 30 years ago, I thought "Boy, would I love to have that score!"

I'm not familiar with this score, but I love Elmer's work...this period in particular! Can't wait to discover it. Thanks Lukas & co.

Interesting to see the Watertower Music logo on the back there...

I noticed that, too. "WaterTower Classics."

I wonder if this is the start of some new kind of relationship with WB (for new releases not already owned by WEA).
