Has anyone notice how particulary good this recording sounds? I played it in the car again this afternoon and I was getting jiggy with it.

Definitely one of the best releases of the year.

Six months later- and it's STILL Boss.

And here's the 1400 x 1400 cover where I fixed a few graphical errors on the original FSM cover:

You know, I never noticed that!

Thanks for the fixed version, which now graces my iPod!

What's the difference? I haven't spotted any.

Just watched a 1963 episode from GUNSMOKE.
A recurring 5 note theme was identical to RCOM
and sure enuf the credited composer was Van Cleave!

glad he didn't "waste" it

For fans of this fun old sci-fi movie, LA Times notes writer and filmmaker Ib Melchior, who wrote the screenplay for director Byron Haskin's colorful film, died recently at age 97:

"The Martian" might kindle some interest in its modest forbear, including the soundtrack. But have you seen the prices for out-of-print cd on Amazon? Over $70. Now it's affordable for any fans who missed it before.

I thought this was OOP meaning SOLD OUT!

so I guess you're saying by definition limited releases (ie 3000 units) are out-of-print, but not necessarily sold out?

What Happened to the song "ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS", that was included in the Laser Disk Edition of this film? I really liked it and thought it was catchy. After all, you did included the song to "RIO CONCHOS" on that CD, which you released. Why not go back and include the "ROBINSON CRUSOE ON MARS" song from the Laser Disk edition. I even have my beloved ancient 45 RPM recording of the song when that vinyl recording wes released! DID YOU GUY GOOF OR SOMETHING????????

When I purchaased my 2 copies of your CD, that was the first cue that I searched for!

Dissappointingly, its not even on the Criterion Collection Edition release of their DVD version!

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH INCLUDING THIS SONG ON THE CD ISSUE???????!!!!!!!

I'll tell you the truth. Until I read your post just now I had no idea there even was such a song. It was not part of Paramount's recorded soundtrack for the score and I just didn't know to try to add this as well...not to say we would even have been able to afford it or get the license.

Sorry!

The song “Robinson Crusoe on Mars” was written in 1999, 35 years after the original film score (1964). The song was written by Victor Lundin and is thus a novelty song totally disconnected from the film score written by Nathan Van Cleave. Acquiring rights for one does not include rights for the other.

Why on earth should it be on the original soundtrack recording of the film? It would be like adding Bill Shatner’s recording of “Rocket Man” to a Star Trek CD.

And, if you must listen to the song, it is indeed on Criterion’s latest DVD release of the film:

https://www.criterion.com/films/821-robinson-crusoe-on-mars

And it is available via a simple search on YouTube.

Addendum: Apparently a singer, Johnny Cymbal, did a recording in 1964 of a song, "Robinson Crusoe on Mars." Is that the one you are referring to -- or the one written and sung by Mr. Lundin?

Cymbal Song:

Lundin's Song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljQi4_ZUrKU&nohtml5=False

And I apologize if my original response above seemed accusatory -- it is often cool to hear these sorts of novelty songs that are generated by films. The Johnny Cymbal song is a total hoot!

But the Lundin song was written in 2000, after the laserdisc, so it must be the 1964.
Would have been a fun bonus artifact at the end of the CD, but certainly not the first track I would look for.

Johnny Cymbal song

Victor Lundin song.

He's not talking about Vic Lundin's song! He talking about a promotional song that was released as a 45rpm record back in the summer of 1964. It was on the old Criterion LD and, happily, it's on both Criterion's DVD and Blu-ray releases. Where can you find it, you ask? It's on an alternate audio channel for the trailer!

I added links in my original post to the Lundin song and to a song from 1964 by Johnny Cymbal which must be the one that he likes -- see above in my edited post. The Cymbal song is really goofy! Is that the one on the Criterion on the alternate trailer tracks?

Yes. There are two alternate audio tracks to the trailer, one from a fan of the movie who has collected all the original posters, lobby cards and pressbooks from the film, and the promo song which I think (actually pretty sure) was intended for kids. On the old Criterion laserdisc there was a photo of the 45 of this song. Not sure if it was ported over to the DVD or Blu-ray. I think not.
