I can't speak for the older generation, but you've got Batman right. Perhaps Harry Potter would be just as important as Lord of the rings for the latest generation.
the blank generation : STAR WARS Generation X: BATMAN
Not to nitpick, but most Gen Xers would probably claim Star Wars as much as Batman. Part of the problem with these labels is that the term "Generation X" - originally defined as those born from the early 1960s to 1969 - has since been redefined to include those born up to 1981. As much as I enjoy Elfman's Batman, I can tell you that as a bonafide member of the redefined Gen X, it was and always will be Star Wars for me.
Where's The Great Train Robbery from 1903? People thought the train was coming right out of the screen at them. I imagine that kind of scare would stick with a generation.
I was born in the mid-eighties, so I just miss being included in Generation X. I'm also too old to be included in the Wired Generation. For me, it was Jurassic Park that brought film music into my life.
I consider myself part of generation y. I just missed out on Batman. My parents deemed me too young to see it in the theater, my older brother got to go . The first movie I saw in the theater was Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Also remember going to see TMNT, Addams Family, Jurassic Park, The Fugitive. Aside from The Fugitive, I didn't care that much for the scores. Was much more into Poltergeist, Aliens, Rambo, Raiders & Temple from catching them on tv.
Born in 1978, I was at the tail end of Generation X. So for me, it was listening to my dad's vinyl records of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Outland in the early-80s that pretty much hooked me on film music.
Aww, I wanna be a part of the "Mancini Generation"!
Born 1971 and it was Star Wars '77, without a doubt. My cousins gave me the 2-LP set (and the Mego Star Trek vinyl Enterprise bridge playset) and I was in '70s heaven...I was in the minority of kids who owned the actual Williams/LSO record because most everyone else had either Meco's disco version or later on, the Grease soundtrack.
I was born in '85 (so the wired/millennium/generation 'Y') and Lord of the Rings was my catalyst. A bit of Potter too, and I was also 'guilty' of finding the synth battle music in Gladiator fascinating - that remains a nostalgically important score and I'd love to have that complete.

Yeah, as an Early Gen Xer myself, I can safely say 'Star Wars' made me perk up and notice Film Music. Maybe not the first time, but one of the first. I was 10 when SW came out, and 21 when 'Batman' came out. It actually took me quite a while for me to warm up to 'Batman', though I already adored 'Pee Wee's Big Adventure' and 'Midnight Run'.

'the blank generation' should read Gen X 'Generation X' should read Gen Y
Going to the pictures in the late fifties & through the sixties, I can say there were LOTS of scores that made me a film music fan. Sorry to be a sad old sod banging on about the sixties, but that's me these days
I was born in 1942, so I would probably be between the Beats and the Baby Boomers. The score that made me a life long fan was The Man With The Golden Arm.
