This is a comments thread about FSM CD: BUtterfield 8: Bronislau Kaper at M-G-M, Vol. 1

Pondering if I want this one or Cleopatra Jones....

One thing I find odd is that the online notes don't get into the sources and quality of the sound as FSM usually does. Does the booklet have that? I know the 'blurb' said "all stereo but Somebody Up There Likes Me", but the samples seem to betray this somewhat.

I finally finished listening to the whole set. The first one I played was BUtterfield 8, and I couldn't help but just play and play it over and over again.

The set as a whole illustrates how versatile Kaper was. But it's worth the expense for just BUtterfield 8 alone. I can't wait for Vol. 2.

Here's a suggestion from one who bought this set and really likes Kaper's score for BUTTERFIELD 8. If you're thinking that maybe it's impotant for you to see the film and hear the score in context:

Don't!

I did, and now the film is coloring my appreciation of the score. I'm sure I'll get over that, as my memory of the film fades back into the dim dark past, but this clearly is (yet another) case of a score gracing a film far more than it deserves. They should storm Liz Taylor's mansion, wrestle that Oscar away from her and deliver it to Bronislau Kaper's family...

funny, this thread inspired me to check out the film from the public liberry.
ru sayin' i should return it b4 i watch it?

I far prefer to have seen the film before hearing the soundtrack CD. The music then takes on a relevance in the context of the film, which gives it much more meaning. I generally find film music unsatisfactory if I cannot connect it to the film.

Kaper's score is outstanding -- it's almost like a character in this film, very nuanced and insinuating -- it elevates what could have been an undistinguished, mediocre film into great trash. I would never be able to appreciate this or any other score unless I heard it first in the context of its film.

Well having a listen through this set I'm happy. Kaper to the rescue with some of his perfect film music.

I haven't and don't intended to see any of these films, I prefer to read the notes and go vicarious on the experience. After all this is when film music was a league better than the films they served, now it's all pretty much same bar a pitiful few exceptions. My imagination always serves me better than the film.

For Vol. 2, I hope LK goes to the 1940s.

One reason: "The Secret Garden". Saw this on TCM over the weekend. Really good movie and excellent Kaper score.

The 1940's was a great decade for Kaper at MGM. In addition to The Secret Garden, Kaper's scores for A Woman's Face, The Mortal Storm, Gaslight, Our Vines Have Tender Grapes, and That Forsythe Woman (among many others) are all outstanding. Hopefully the musical elements for at least some of these scores exist (the recent release of Dragon Seed and Lukas' hint that more Stothart will be forthcoming is a tantalizing indication of what we may see down the road). A Kaper Vol. 2 of 1940's scores would definitely be most welcome.

15 years ago, I dared only DREAM that we'd one day get the complete "Mutiny on the Bounty."

The biggest joy I've experienced through FSM (and there have been MANY joys) is the way this label has embraced the works of Bronislau Kaper!

Always vastly underrepresented on LP, we have seen his discography grow and grow. Each title is distinctive and wonderful.

And now we get "Vol. 1!!!!!!!" of Kaper at MGM. I can barely catch my breath!

Thank you, FSM!

Here, here.

Why is the U in BUtterfield capitalized?

This question indicates you are too young to be posting here. Please log off, step away from the computer, and tell your Mother what a bad boy you've been.

Absolutely in agreement. Please follow up the Butterfield 8 set with another soon, Volume 2 is urgently wanted. Bronni provides the goods like no other can.

Those of you who love The Great American Songbook tunes should give a listen to the BUtterfield 8 cut number 4, the part called "Augie’s No. 1".

It's a secondary tune in this picture, but just blew me away when I heard it the first time. It's a great melody in the "Songbook" tradition, in a swell arrangement, and deserving of lyrics!

For those who don't have the cd, you'll hear just a smidge of it after :50 in the sound samples.

I love Clifton Fadiman for writing, in 1935, this very pithy summary of the novel BUTTERFIELD 8:

"The story concerns a high-grade nymph named Gloria Wandrous... [who] devotes herself to rye, despair and venery in about equal proportions."

Looks like Kaper Vol. 2, as well as any other possible MGM track releases, are causes only for daydreaming now...

Too bad.

At least we got lots of wonderful scores before they stopped flowing.

Please, correct me if I'm wrong...
But if I understand, it's impossible to find Martin's version of song from Ada on CD for normal price (I could find it only at HIGHLY expensive 8CD box)?
ps I don't ask for mp3 etc. from iTunes or any other downloadable services - I prefer CDs, even if I buy them just for one song!!! smile
