Don´t get me wrong, I´m just curious. I could imagine that some people will be embarassed by the mere question and I really hope that I´m not violating the posting rules. So in advance, I´m sorry for that. Don´t get mad at me, I don´t want to "convert" anyone.

But years ago a fellow german score collector made his opinion very clear when he said "I always imagined that Jerry Goldsmith only wrote music for real men and since you are gay why do you hear him? Wouldn´t you listen to James Horner or Rachael Portman? They make music for women."

I always thought that this was a funny, ridiculous and outright impertinent remark (though I wasn´t mad at him). I don´t want to start a flame war, please consider this question as serious as possible.

I´m just interested if there are sub-groups inside an already small group.

And yes, I´m outing myself smile

"Come out, come out, wherever you are." (forgive me, I couldn´t resist) smile

P.S.: are there any women at all who are score collectors? I´m under the impression that here are only men and I certainly would love to be corrected.

I'm not gay myself, but there are many gay people who post here (some even post regular gay-themed threads).

Not that many women, though, but the few we have are very much appreciated!

Not enough women post here on a continuing basis. They're vastly outnumbered by men in this forum, but sometimes they do post and do so with verve on occasion. (Joan....where you be these days? Holly....still courtside at Knicks Games?) After saying that, I look back at the recent thread about 'Women/Farting' and wonder why the women even remain on this board at all sometimes. Marlene, your profile is....unusual, in the 'about me' portion. Care to elaborate?

I'm not interested in the gay question, but I wonder why film music fandom is, to all appearances, an overwhelmingly male domain. If you go by Internet participation, that's the conclusion you draw, right?

What is it about film music that women shouldn't like it in the same numbers men do?

Just a play on the persona Marlene Dietrich liked to be associated with. Why did I choose her to be my avatar? Secondly because she´s one of those gay icons. Well, that wasn´t my first reason. Actually, I like her style. She represents some kind of glamour that is long gone, a reminder of the artistic industry Hollywood once was. When I was hitting puberty she was one of my icons. That waned over the years of course but sometimes I´m reminded of this.

I pondered whether I should choose her or Seven of Nine (ups, now I´m a true geek smile) but in the end Mrs. Dietrich won.

Furthermore, I like to play with stereotypes and clishés. Besides, this forum seems to need a bit female glamour wink

Maybe it´s because their parents parented them into a different direction whereas boys are brought up to make decisions. Both points reflect of course only the views of the parents. I know only one woman personally who likes scores. She was brought up to be extremely independent. Maybe it has something to do with that... but hey, I don´t know.

I think IT'S A MAD MAD MAD MAD WORLD is one of the gayest, merriest scores of all time. Also Tiomkin's THE HAPPY TIME and THE FOUR POSTER.

And then there's Mancini's GAILY, GAILY. I could not refer to myself as particularly a collector of gay scores, but it's best not to rule anything in or out. As soon as you say that those are not for you, then something comes along that you absolutely must have!

I think Marlene means gay collectors of scores, not collectors of gay scores......

Welcome, Marlene!

There are many gay collectors of scores here. I think you'll find that many gay members have a different sensibility as to what kinds of scores and films they like, and that, as well as their personal comments about themselves will become quite apparent to you. I'm gay, and have been in a partnered relationship for 28+ years.

It's a very diverse group here at FSM, but sadly, needs far more women as members. Thank you for joining us.

As for women film score collectors, my personal feeling is that, in general, women don't collect scores, or any other kinds of items in large numbers, because they are far more practical and sensible.

I think men tend to be dreamers, often living in a fantasy world of their own making, often to their detriment in dealing with a real world. This is an escape.

Hope you have a nice time here and will contribute some interesting new thoughts to our discussions.

I'm not gay. At the same time I don't think there are any 'straight' film score fans....we're all geeks and weirdos, and I mean that in a possitive sense wink

Zap,Zap,Zap.... We know you're straight (with a capitol 'S'). But you didn't really need to say "I'm not interested in the gay question, but..." This, in response TO a gay question. Why would you even click on it?

I wonder why film music fandom is, to all appearances, an overwhelmingly male domain. If you go by Internet participation, that's the conclusion you draw, right?

BS Theory #1: Because many people post from work, and women on average, in the US, only make $.67 to the mens' dollar, and are aware that they're more likely to be bothered in the workplace, they're less likely participate in shenanigans like message board posting on work time.

BS Theory #2: Because film score buffs are probably mostly a subset of movie buffs, a particular hobby/obsession that is more socially acceptable for men than women. Whereas once movie buffs appeared cultured and tasteful, now the popular perception of movie buffs is tarnished by the image of movie geeks like Harry Knowles. As with other subcultures like gaming, LARPing, comic collecting and so forth, the women are there, but they're simply outnumbered by the men.

BS Theory #3: Because film scoring is, in large part, an extension of classical music, a traditionally largely male domain. As with mathematics and engineering, orchestral composition has long been wrongly thought to be a field in which women are less likely to be competent, creating both a hostile environment for women trying to get into the field as well as a popular perception of the field as being largely without women. As with creators, so with consumers: fandom follows form.

Okay. I'm all out of nonsense for now. Have a nice day.

Are you really "outing" yourself when you go by the name Marlene and use a photo of Dietrich as your avatar?

Do a search on "gay" on this board, and you'll find me on the business end of the gayest topics, remarks, picture postings, and just about anything else you can name.

Welcome to the board, Marlene! Not long ago I finished Maria Riva's memoir of her mum, and learned a whole helluva lot about the fascinating, successful and self-centered woman that was Marlene Dietrich. If you haven't read it I recommend it.

Thank you, thank you. There are so many nice people here, I couldn´t imagine. I still am very fascinated that there are others. Maybe even I myself was under the impression of this stereotype that filmmusic is something for straight machos. smile My boyfriend and I are together for 5 years now, we plan to marry soon. And he hates scores! smile

Very well said! Very well indeed! Did I mention that I also like Star Trek? That turns me into the complete basement dweller, I assume. wink

Just imagine, there are actually people who don´t know anything about this.

I admit that I did not do a search - yet. I also admit that the question of this topic came up when I read one of your comments smile I thought "Wow, finally. I have to ask this." And thank you, Dave.

BTW, I read "Marlene Dietrich by her daughter". Fascinating book, especially for a memoir. When the book was released I still was a fan of Mrs. Dietrich and I saw some of Mrs. Riva´s promoting efforts on German TV - very interesting. I even have a coffeetable photobook of Mrs. Dietrich and some of her movies on DVD.

But today I´m more interested in Uncle Scrooge big grin

I'm gay and totally eschew the stereo-typing that goes on.

I love filmscores - been collecting since I was 14. I'm totally masculine - not a camp bone in my body, so no requirement to "act straight"!

I love Williams, Goldsmith, Giacchino, Silvestri, Thomas Newman, James Newton Howard, Horner (when he's fresh!), Bear Mc Creery, John Powell, some Zimmer and so on!

I hate Lady Gaga and Kylie but will download the occasional Madonna. Not into rap/RnB/HipHop or other modern kinds of "music"!

I don't dress in women's clothes and tend to avoid guys who do and I don't go on or to parades etc

I'm just an ordinary guy who likes a simple quiet life - but I'm a HOMO big grin
