The score is absolutely gorgeous. Newman treated the material with utter seriousness (ala Goldsmith's Secret Of NIMH) and produced one of his finest. The contrast of low and high strings creates this dreamlike, mournful sound that transcends the simple animation. Personally, I can do without the few songs, but the score is top shelf.

I placed my order an hour ago, and I'm still ecstatic that this is finally made available again. THIS is one of MY holy grails. Having seen this film numerous times as a child, the music really stuck with me, and I watched the movie again two weeks ago... brilliant, brilliant film. The songs by Van Dyke Parks are excellent as well. I was disappointed that I wasn't around in 2005 when it was released, and that I missed out on it, and I didn't want to buy it on eBay for $80... I almost bit the bullet and bid on an auction for the CD two months ago, and thankfully I lost. Now it's available again, and I couldn't be happier. I haven't been this excited for a CD release in a LONG time. THANK YOU PERCEPTO, TAYLOR WHITE, SCREEN ARCHIVES... YOU'RE THE BEST!

That's awesome Basil. I also ordered a copy. I'm excited! And don't apologize for being excited. It happens to all of us.

Here's one more for the record. A post I made in a different thread a few days ago... Back in late April when the Intrada Jack the Giant Killer thread that I made here was still booming, Taylor White of Percepto was posting there and I kindly asked him if he could contact me privately. I asked him if he had any spare copies of this title on hand and if he'd be willing to sell one to me at a reasonable price. What happened from there on was a real surprise - he told me it was at the plant and that it was being repressed. So we exchanged emails back and forth for a little while, and I got to know all the nitty gritty details about this release. The one e-mail I got from him - this was around April 30th or so - said to expect it "in a week or two". I have no idea what date or what time it'll be posted for sale - all I know is that once the CDs arrive at SAE's warehouse, that's when they'll be made available for ordering. I've been checking their site literally every 15 minutes for 12 hours a day since last Thursday or Friday... not a good way for me to have spent the last week or so, but I'm devoted to picking up at least one copy, as this is one of my true holy grails. It's a movie I recommend you guys ought to see as well. I can't recall the last time any movie truly moved me emotionally, but this brought tears in my eyes. Not sure if it's due to childhood memories, or because it's such a dark film and the underlying themes were something that I had major problems with when I was growing up... but it's a real animation classic. Joe Ranft of Pixar fame (RIP) served as part of the story / screenwriting duties, and there's voice talents such as Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman (RIP), Timothy Stack and Thurl Ravenscroft (RIP)... people on the animation team such as Chris Buck, Kevin Lima, Rob Minkoff and Kirk Wise, and some very fun songs by Van Dyke Parks. David Newman's score too, of course.
