If I was getting one version of Princess Mononoke, which one should I get? The original album release or the symphonic suite?

Symphonic Suite. The original CD is fine but the tracks are very short and unfulfilling as a listen. The symphonic CD is much more robust.

Since by sheer coincidence, the original soundtrack CD came in the mail just today (in the Milan bundle with Spirited Away), four years after I bought the symphonic suite, I have to say I could not finally choose between them.

The suite is the more balanced listen, I agree. But the ost has electronic elements (especially the deep growl at the beginning and the bewitching Kodamas music) that I miss in the suite. And the power of The Demon God in the ost, for example, just hits me with greater force.

On the other hand, I just re-loaded the symphonic suite on my ipod to keep the ost company, so I've clearly got it bad - or double plus good, actually.

If you know the music well through the film, you may prefer the ost. If you want to hear a more seamless musical presentation, go with the suite.

To start, anyway.

And speaking of Hisaishi - Miyazaki scores....

I also just this weekend discovered the Image album from Howl's Moving Castle. Which is a fully orchestral work that is a tremendously well thought out suite, with clear homages to Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra.

According to a story I found online, this was an early imagining of the score that was a little too rarified and abstract for Miyazaki, which is why the final score features the catchy waltz throughout that makes not a single appearance on the image album.

So if you are a fan of Hisaishi's Howl's, I think the Image Album is an indispensable companion!

The original score is my favorite version, but not the Milan American release, as it replaced Yoshikazu Mera's gorgeous renditions of the Mononoke Theme Song with a much less powerful English version performed by Sasha Lazard, and only included a short version of it at that! I believe both the Milan French and German releases leave the Mera tracks intact, or you could always get the Japanese Tokuma release, which has the best looking packaging of the bunch.

The Symphonic Suite is good too. It contains some very interesting reworkings of the original material, particularly in the latter tracks, but nothing beats the original score in my book.

But why would you just want to get just one version of Princess Mononoke? I have three myself (four if you count the American Milan) and wouldn't want to be without a single one of them!

I'm not really a fan of the film itself but love the score. Been playing the soundtrack recently. Its really layered and complex. One of Hisaishi's more adult works. Found this article below.

Symphonic Suite all the way.

Together with Prometheus recording of "Conan the Barbarian" this wonderful "Princess Mononoke Symphonic Suite" is the most important music album in my life.

"Mononoke Symphonic Suite" is incredible in terms of performance, recording quality and atmosphere. Sound of this recording is very deep and dark but also wonderfuly colorful and detailed.

I generally prefer the OST's but I'll seek out the symphonic suite since I never heard it.

With Hisaishi's anime albums I always prefer the symphonic suites. This one, Nausicaa or Arion for example.

After comparing the two I think the OST has more power and umpf in the performance. The synphonic suite deviates to much from the film score and wanders to much musically speaking.

But in my opinion the suite has a much better flow. The OST has too many short tracks and that is something I have never liked in a soundtrack album. So, for me, the suite is the truly enjoyable listen.

I love the Mononoke Hymn pieces in the original soundtrack. One of my favorite Hisaishi melodes.

I can vouch for the quality of the original soundtrack. Some of it is downright sublime, and I mean in the quality of the recording, specifically. Overall, it sounds like this is a no-lose situation, no bad options.

Another vote for Symphonic Suite.

I have been obsessed with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind lately, interesting enough. Within the past few months I have watched the film 3 times, listened to the Hisaishi score nearly a number times through the weeks and have ordered the collection of the manga so I can understand the full story. Nausicaä is one which I prefer the soundtrack release over the Symphonic Suite.

I love Nausicaä. The story, the animation, the score. Just a masterpiece. Disney could learn a lot on how to write a compelling, complex female antagonist. The Symphonic Suits just arent for me though. I always prefer the OST's.

The question which one to buy never came to my mind.
Needed both.
I mean, it's Joe Hisaishi! big grin
