In the case of BTTF III, I can somewhat forgive it because they did show Marty being hesitant to fire a real gun at first, with his first shot going wildly over the gallery. I always sort of viewed that as, once he fired that first round and knew what to expect, he then turned around and was able to be a 'Crack Shot'. Still a bit of a stretch, but not as big of a leap as in some other cases.

Yes, there's at least some nuance there for suspension of disbelief. Unlike Rae who picks up a light saber for the first time and beats a Sith Lord. All that said, I'm pretty sure if you can play video games you can control drone strikes in the military. eek

...an explosion or other loud noise goes off near the protagonist, and we're "treated" to muffled dialogue and high-pitched ringing on the soundtrack for the next several seconds? As someone who has had low-grade tinnitus for the last 15+ years, this is especially ennervating.

...when the bad guy gets away with it.
So, Darth Vader, what the hell!?!
Let's just look at some of his crimes.
Killer of Children!
Child Abandonment.
Failure To Pay Child Support.
Torture of Innocents.
Destruction of Planets Destroying Millions of Lives.
Chopping Off Appendages.
But then, he says "Oh, sorry...regrets." And he gets to join the good side of the Force!?!
Nah, he should have been sentenced to suffer with Dr. Hans Reinhardt on Planet Hellfire!

Didn't someone mention at some point the cliche that when characters need to draw their own blood -- to be "blood brothers", to collect a blood specimen, whatever -- they always make a gigantic deep slash across the palm of their hand, in lieu of taking the blood from a less painful or less important part of their body?

Just saw this again on the new Netflix movie, "Fear Street, Part One 1994."

There's never an indication that the character has throbbing pain or is unable to grab things afterwards!

The layers of clothes people wear to go to bed in US sitcoms. Is it really that cold at night over there? I sleep naked...I just wanted to get that out there.

...a character is trying to cross a collapsing bridge (either on foot or in a vehicle), and they just manage to outrace the collapsing portions of the bridge, even leapfrogging across the falling blocks or planks? It always looks cartoony as hell, either because the actor/vehicle is replaced by a CGI stunt double, or else it’s incredibly obvious they’re being held up by a wire as their feet flail about not even touching the blocks or planks underneath them.

Seriously, wearing clothing in bed is extremely uncomfortable the way it wrinkles up on you.

The worst example of this I've ever saw was Legolas in one of those Hobbit movies. For a big budget movie that was an embarrassment.

I wear nothing but a pair of underpants to bed.

There's a doozy with a car in the current F9.

Yeah, I think I saw that in the trailer.

Characters are given a time limit then achieve the impossible with actions that clearly exceed the time limit.

Army of the Dead: 19 minutes to a nuke goes off. an idiot character leaves a las vegas hotel crosses while hiding from zombies to another hotel, searches the hotel and finds what they're looking for then fights their way to the roof in what is about 10 minutes. Can you even get out of a Vegas Hotel in 10 minutes?

The Tomorrow War: 6 minutes to leave the area. That means descending 7 flights of stairs and running what appears to be about 10 blocks, all while frequently stopping to shoot stuff.

It's very stupid and just bad writing in every case.

In thrillers when there's a heavily-pregnant girlfriend in a car chase or on the run, they always have an inopportune moment when their waters break...

Agreed. This one probably bothers me more than any other liberties action flicks take with reality. I can buy cars blowing up from one or two perfectly placed bullets and characters leaping from one speeding vehicle to the next and somehow managing to hang on through it all, but to get from point A to point B in a physically impossible amount of time? No way.

The ending of Goldfinger (as much as I love that film) kills me every time for that very reason. When you see 10 seconds left on the countdown and then we cut to Felix and the "bomb squad" entering the vault from the third level up? It's like, welp, shucks, they're all dead. Maybe if they'd gotten there a couple minutes sooner. But somehow they manage to fly down those stairs in about two seconds and magically appear beside James to flick the switch. I don't know if any of them could have gotten there in time if Oddjob had "Kisched" them over the railing.

...booby traps inside of ancient temples and the like are still in perfect working order, despite the people who created them being dead for decades or even centuries? Wouldn't the cogs and gears be clotted with dirt? Wouldn't the ropes have rotted away or broken? See the Indiana Jones movies and The Goonies for examples.

The massive punishment that the lead actors bodies can suffer & just brush off in action films. I saw the latest Mission Impossible film, & at the end of a (long!) car chase, Tom Cruise crashes into the side of a car, get thrown through the windshield, flies through the air for about 20 feet & crashes onto the ground. He can hardly get up (I should think so, massive internal injuries & most of his bones broken...but that's in the real world), he painfully gets to his feet & hobbles down the road & escapes to a boat...where he's perfectly okay.

Yeah, this is really tiring, and it's in SO many movies. It's applied cartoon physics to live action characters in action movies. Those things would be more gripping if the physical world the characters inhabit resembles reality a bit more.
I remember the shootout in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN was so jolting precisely because it was done very realistically, none of the characters did anything that wasn't believable and that real people couldn't have done, so every bullet was scary.

What Mr. Jack said, also the guy who takes the hero thru the temple, cave, etc., with all the treasures always seems to either:
#1. Take a bullet, arrow, poison dart, etc., for the hero, suffering a miserable death with no reward. Or...
#2. Betray and try to steal the treasure from the hero, which inevitably circles back to #!.

The conspiracy theorist is right. Like a volcano will explode or the government is microchipping vaccines or the cops are in on it.

It just gives real-life conspiracy theorists more reasons to live in a camper van in a forest and spout rubbish on the internet or via CB radio.

Just make films where there's a simple and obvious explanation and reduce the film running time accordingly.
