Do Humming Birds really hum? I always see slow-mo videos of them hovering but never with sound. I believe they do. Apparently, their brains are so small that they can't remember the words to all the songs they know. Just the tunes.

Surprisingly, this isn't a self-help guide for FSM'ers and their foot fungus. Humming birds have a hum to their rapid beating wings, but you have to be fairly close to hear it. Little brown birds that I feed bread crumbs to, also have a kind of "hum" as well. The little brown birds have figured one of the ways to get my attention and to fed them, is to fly passed my head by a foot or two.

Also, I used to stand under a feeder and hold a finger beneath. The birds would come up and perch on my finger and drink away. They knew they could get away if I ever tried anything! Awesome!

Do Humming Birds really hum? I always see slow-mo videos of them hovering but never with sound. Ever heard those eensy squeensy fans that people hold up to their face? Their wings sound like that. Their voices.... are like chirring, sort-of. The males also squeak at a.... uuuuh.... certain time of year, if you get my meaning....

And here I thought people were going to yawn and yell "NEXT" when opening this thread. Thank you for the polite interest.

The males also squeak at a.... uuuuh.... certain time of year, if you get my meaning.... David Attenborough once said that that sqeak, you mention , translates as ' uh, oh, I landed an ugly one'.

Really? I thought they squeak when they're trying to get a female's attention, so I wonder why he said that.

The squeaking might be the female. In hummingbird speak it stands "Flap on you wanker" lol

Well, maybe the U.K. hummingbirds do that. Here, they do a pretty awesome display dive, at spectacular speeds, and make the squeak by a means that stumped scientists until not too long ago. They're pretty cool birds.

They're pretty cool birds. An often used phase and very apt at the time. However, the next morning, when you have sobered up, maybe not so much.
