Had an opportunity to reaquaint myself with this movie last night (it's been about ten years since I last saw it) and I was struck by how much of the score was omitted from the cd release. I've only recently become familiar with Michael Kamen's work but this surely deserves a better release than what is currently available? Given all the wonderful releases we gave had of late I would like to think that this score would be an obvious candidate for an expanded or complete rerelease? Anyone know what the likelihood of it happening is?

This is one score that I always meant to buy but could never bring myself to actually get. I couldn't get past Bryan Adam's "Everything I do I do for you."

I remember when this was at the top of the charts back in 1991 for 11 BLOODY WEEKS! It's all you could hear on radio, from stereos, anywhere. AAaaarrrrgghhhh!

I know it's on the CD, I just can't go near it.

Amazing score, aching for an expansion. I happened by a really cool video just posted at scorringsessions.com of Kamen at the scorring sessions... you can hear some unreleased music. The man is sorely missed...

I would like it if someone re-recorded this. The original score is rife with performance bobbles (especially for the trumpets). Generally a sloppy reading of a terrific score. I know time was a factor on this film but poor Kamen always got saddled with time constraints. Last Action Hero was also a rush right until the then. I still have a KEYBOARD interview with him from 1993 where he talks about film scoring, the process, and specifically Last Action Hero.

Yes, Kamen is sorely missed.

I have to be honest. It is hard for me to believe that Michael Kamen does not get more notoriety on this board. He wrote some fabulous scores and Robin Hood Prince Of Thieves is definately one of them. If it were ever to see an expanded release, I would definately buy it. To the best of my knowledge, I don't think any of Kamen's scores have been released a second time. There are many that have never seen the light of day on CD. He was a great talent and left us way too early.

I love how they put Kamen's Prince of Thieves Theme on the Morgan Creek logo.

And sadly, none editor offers a Kamen Cd since his death. Yep; it will be fine to get an expanded Robin Hood.. and why not a lethal weapon 4, a real die hard 3, etc...
It seems he has been forgotten. Hopefully, "we" are here to recognize his talent.

It's a brilliant score and I would enjoy an expanded version, should one be offered. But I think all of the important musical ideas are preserved on the cd. I miss some of the battle music from the finale, but the main highlights are there.

In any case, I think one could argue that this score is Kamen's finest among many excellent scores.

And yes, Disney home video is using the "Overture". Also Kamen's own FROM THE EARTH TO THE MOON theme was based on it as well.

Here's the great feature on the making of the score with Maestro Kamen. He was awesome!

Enjoy!

What they should do is release the additional 45 minutes of Robin Hood so they don't have to pay rights for the 45 minutes that every film score collector already has.

I've never really been a big fan of Michael Kamen's music, but I really enjoy his Prince of Thieves. Just a good, rousing old-fashioned adventure score with a terrific theme and some exciting passages. I'd be up for an expansion. smile

Well, it's one of the last tracks, so you could just, you know, stop the CD after the final score track finished. Just a thought. smile

I don't have it.

As I said in the other Kamen thread, I would not pick up an expanded release of the album, as I think the current presentation is more or less perfect. That said, I think a reissue could remedy some of the problems with the existing release, such as a mediocre sound quality and some very odd and sudden fade-outs at the end of tracks.

Sorry to say Thor that the last track of score (on CD) is completely stupid with its edits. Look at the movie and you will understand the poor version of this track. But I can understand you 'cause all the others tracks are very good. In fact, I don't hope a complete score but the complete real raw versions of music included in the last track!

You don't mean on the logos, though, do you?

I know they're using it to score their advertising spots, but the Disney logo at the beginning of a feature is still always accompanied by a variation of "When You Wish Upon A Star," isn't it?

I'm not really sure what you mean with 'edits'. I think the selection and organization of cues are great - it's a smokin' album - but as I said, it has some sudden fade-outs and a rather mediocre sound quality.

Well, I mean that the last track is a poor combination of differents (edits) tracks which are not relate between them. I will prefer to have all these tracks not combined and complete. And I hope one day we'll have the complete final battle and the complete attack on the village in the forest.

I'm afraid I still don't understand what you mean. Maybe it's a language issue. Are you talking about the track "Abduction and the Final Battle at the Gallows"? I think this is a great track, a good rollicking ride that closes the album wonderfully, with a great rousing crescendo. Also, the Bryan Adams song that comes next is a great musical segue - from the powerful orchestral flourishes to a calm, reflective pop ballad.

The Bryan Adams song is horrible, IMHO.
