Described as a "hallucinogenic-baroque-witch-flick," Valerie a týden divu is a Czech New Wave film from 1970 that I have yet to see, but the score by Lubos Fiser I highly recommend. It is dreamy, folky, and deliciously disturbing, with haunting vocals and lilting instrumentals that make me want to dance around a funeral pyre in my loin cloth.

Others have described the score as reminiscent of both The Wicker Man and Rosemary's Baby, a claim which I can hardly deny, and which drew me to this CD in the first place. However, to my ears, it is lovlier than The Wicker Man and more accessible than Rosemary's Baby, and makes for a truly transcendent listening experience. I'm not promising it'll change your life, but you may be doing yourself a favor by checking out the samples, and if it strikes your fancy, as it did mine, by all means, make it a part of your collection.

I just finished watching this tonight! Highly recommended, both the film and score.

There was a group of musicians who did live performances of an alternate score to screenings of the film just very recently, under the name of THE VALERIE PROJECT.

I've grown up with this film and it's been many years since I first saw it -yes, I am of that tiny European nation that actually produced the movie many years ago- and I was charmed by the music since the first viewing and never, never would I imagine it would be released on CD. Needless to say, when it was I ordered it instantly and it gave me a lot of pleasure. Good that you also like it ! And be sure to check the film too when you have the chance, it's a masterpiece that the director was sadly never able to repeat again.

Thank you so much American Nightmare. I cannot believe this score has been released. One of the most beautiful scores I have ever heard, I have been in love with it since I first saw the movie, even to the extent of recording it directly from the video. Wonders never cease!!

I recently acquired this wonderful score recently and it shot right up to be one of my favorite scores. I've probably played it more this past year than any other score.

I saw the film (which I knew NOTHING about) on TCM early in 2018 and was transfixed. What an amazing movie!
It's hard to describe. It is filled with Gothic and Horror tropes but also images of exquisite beauty on a really low budget. Based on an equally fascinating Czech book by Vítezslav Nezval which is an awesome blend of surrealism like Max Ernst's A YOUNG GIRL DREAMS OF TAKING THE VEIL and Gothic novels like THE MONK and CASTLE OF OTRANTO, it is unlike anything you've seen before. I got the beautiful Criterion edition of the film which includes the alternate modern score (without the dialog or sound fx). I wasn't too impressed with the new score but the original is magnificent. The extras contain a "making of" short about producing the new score and it is there that the availability of the original score on CD was mentioned. I was shocked! I just assumed it would be lost and unavailable. How many Czech New Wave films have score releases of any kind?
The CD is already OOP and has to be found in the secondary market but I found a reasonable one.

We film score fans (especially Americans) are often criticized for our Hollywood-centric composer tastes. This score is a great example of why we should seek out more non US composers. The score is inventive, melodic, mysterious, lovely, creepy, jaunty and very eclectic. Do yourself a favor and seek it out.

Agree, its an operatic treasure. Not much of a story but it's an artistic treat of sound and imagery.
I too was floored the soundtrack existed and even received a CD release. I recently purchased the film on Blu Ray too. Somewhere in the Custom Cover thread I made a custom cover.

3.

+ one recently re-recorded. there is a few others (literary a few) but those are not exactly part of new wave after the russian invasion took place.

The same thing happened to me when I found the CD in 2010, and subsequently saw the film. I have a massive soundtrack collection but this gorgeous score quickly leaped into my top 5. I also picked up a limited edition LP a few years ago - love the cover art as well..!

What are the others besides "Valerie..."?

Speaking of decent releases only:

Morgiana / The Cremator on the same CD
Daisies

+ 2 LPs
The Shop on the Main Street
Adrift

+ recently re-recorded
Markéta Lazarová

Bssides these there is a few more compilations/anthologies (Svoboda, Hapka) but those cover more recent movies from 70s or 80s.

Ray Worley, your last paragraph is spot on. I just downloaded this score and listened to it. I especially loved the brief choral passages, alternating between horrifying and beautifully mysterious. I researched Lubos Fiser and learned that he has many concert compositions on disk. I definitely want to hear more. I also enjoy seeking out scores from around the world and/or scores with unusual instrumentation. How refreshing not to hear more comic book symphonies. Feel like playing Rosemary's Baby, The Elephant Man, Justine, and Boom!

Thanks!!! I'm ordering Morgiana/The Cremator right now. Wish I had known about DAISIES earlier. It seems to be available only for crazy stupid money now. I'll have to keep looking. I LOVE that movie...it's so insane. Maybe my third favorite Czech New Wave film. After VALERIE and CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS.

I forgot about SHOP ON MAIN STREET, I have that LP.

UPDATE: After finding the DAISIES CD for ridiculous prices (from $89 to $171) on Amazon and ebay, I found several on discogs for reasonable prices and ordered one. Yay!

Hi Ray

I did not like the DAISES cd at all, a real mish-mash of styles and very difficult to listen to.

However the other Finders Keepers Czech score that I would highly recommend is Mala Morska Vila, a version of The Little Mermaid:

https://www.soundtrack.net/album/mala-morska-vila/

You can get it for a very reasonable price on Amazon. It's a really evocative score, and has that strange other world feel of the VALERIE score, with the odd sound effect or voice from the actual soundtrack of the movie (or it sounds like it). The music generally utilises a small orchestra with emphasis on female voice and some synthesiser effects, but now and again the full orchestra kicks in. It's a wonderful album, the pounding repetitive melody in the main theme gives me the impression of the ocean. This is well worth getting!

Dave

Speaking of CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS... Jirí Šust was actually one of the few Czech composers who was VERY aware of his legacy and kept pretty much everything - also his widow (who passed not so long ago) wasn't a complete bitch.

Wish Fišer would care at least half as much about his film work and didn't probably consider it just necessary evil to pay the bills. I exchanged a few phone calls with his widow a few years ago when there was probably the last attempt by another label to release something (and then backing out in 11th hour)... She's such a sweet lady who actually remembered many scores that are my own favorites as well... just there were no tapes in her possession.

Some other composers kept something as well but it it spread over their own archives, TV archives (in both Czech and Slovak Republics now) and various smaller parties. You can check this for details of what still survives in one form or the other... https://archivcsfh.ostlib.com/en/
