This is a lovely score by Cliff Eidelman, his first, full-scale movie soundtrack.
The heavenly choir and orchestra tracks are just beautiful, with a fantastic main theme as well.
There is also some big, blood and thunder war/action cues, based on a classical piece of music.
The intrada CD is nice, but the recording lacks oomph to me.
Maybe a remastering/expansion could be on the cards?!
I was surprised to find no thread on this score.
What do fellow posters think of this one?

I only have a single cue on an Eidelman promo compilation, but I think it's great. Why does he have to be stuck with straight-to-tv tearjerkers these days?

Only so much work to go around, and a certain production house of composers has a strong grip on on a lot it? wink

Magdalene is great but imho the weakest part of his early epic trilogy - Magdalene, Christopher Columbus and especially Triumph of the Spirit, which is at the top of my favorite scores ever written for a movie.

All of these scores (and certainly many more of his) would deserve being reissued/expanded/remastered.

I didn't much care for Christopher Columbus: The Discovery at first, but I've warmed to it over time. I bet if I got Magdalene I'd feel the same way about Eidelman's score; all I remember of it is a very loud choral opening... unlike most of the world, I actually saw the movie it was written for - about a German priest (Steve Bond) and how he was inspired to write "Silent Night" after being involved with the title character (Nastassja Kinski, wasting her time and talent yet again) - and it was so dull. We didn't even get any Kinskian nude scenes.

Magdalene is made up of pure choral brilliance with some very strong orchestral parts; wholly recommended as it's the whole body of work by Eidelman, a sadly underrated composer in the favor of younger hac.........no; wait. I am not going there.

I have not heard this score but I buy anything of Cliff Eidelman's that I can. His very beautiful and understated score for the film ONE TRUE THING is one of my favorites. I would be in line to buy an expanded/remastered MAGDALENE (or the original release for that matter) if it is ever made available.

LOL!
That actually reads like one of Mr Kimmel's 'we are so doing this release next' comments on his guessing threads.
Something you wanna tell us HW?

Much early Cliff Eidelman begs for remastering and expansion, but Christopher Columbus most of all -- less than half of this epic and complex score is released, and that only in so-so sound quality.

Unfortunately no teaser there - wish I could say there was - but most sincerely would be interested in purchasing an expanded release of one of Cliff Eidelman's scores - I appreciate this thread and learning about Eidelman's early releases.

MAGDALENE is an incredible effort. I do not have the CD in front of me, but if I remember correctly, I want to say the notes in the CD said Eidelman was 23 at the time. Composed for and played by a 100 peice orchestra. I also have to agree with Yavar. COLUMBUS: THE DISCOVERY is in dire need of and expapnsion and remastering. Another great score by someone other than Jerry Goldsmith. Of course Goldsmith is great, but there are MANY other great scores out there that could be released by someone other than Goldsmith.

Still hoping an expanded, improved sound re-release of this score might be in some labels pipeline?

And speaking of Jerry Goldsmith, as mentioned above, there's this from wiki...

'Soon after the release of the film Triumph of the Spirit, legendary composer Jerry Goldsmith took a real interest in Eidelman's career. In an interview in 1999, he commented “Cliff Eidelman is a great talent with amazing potential.”

With the remastered, slightly expanded re-issue of TOY SOLDIERS from Intrada having just dropped, I wonder if this wonderful score by Cliff Eidelman might be in their future pipeline for a sound restoration and maybe expansion too.
I don't know how much music was missing from their original release, but the sound sure could do with a nice clean-up and boost.
It's a shame that such fantastic music can't be heard in optimal sound.
Anyone else?

Situation is the same for me now as in 2008 (per my previous posting). Still only have that one gorgeous cue from MAGDALENE on the promo compilation. That sounds perfectly fine to my ears, but I obviously haven't heard the whole thing. Need to be on the lookout for this, thanks for the reminder.

I'm not familiar with this score, but I'm going to have to check it out now. I would love a release of Eidelman's Leap of Faith score. I agree, He's an underrated composer and needs to have some more high-profile projects.

Yes, I was always gonna come back to this one.
What a fantastic debut score.
Such a command of style and structure, so early in his career.
Some of the Christmas vibes in this score are truly beautiful and there's a lovely rendition of Silent Night and once again, his use of choir is sublime. I would say it's heavenly.
There's no footprint of it at all on YouTube, as far as I can tell, so you're just gonna have to take my word for it on this one.
