Holy Mackeral! COME A HORSEMEN and now you top it! I won't have anymore holy grails at this rate! One of Elmer's all time greatest! The description is apt, this is Bernstein's STAR WARS!

I just realized the SUPERMAN box was a year long ruse to distract us from this even greater project. You had it planned all the time! eek

Here's the release:

BERNSTEIN BONANZA: THE COMPLETE HEAVY METAL ON CD AT LAST!

Film Score Monthly proudly releases the thundering symphonic masterpiece by the great Elmer Bernstein

Linden, VA – March 13, 2008 – Yet another soundtrack ‘Holy Grail’ can now be marked off the list as Film Score Monthly releases the much-requested Elmer Bernstein masterwork, Heavy Metal.

A great irony of soundtrack collecting is that one of the most fantastic symphonic scores ever written is for a movie entitled “Heavy Metal.” The 1981 animated feature (adapted from stories published in the magazine of the same name) was an adult-oriented anthology with copious amounts of sex and violence. Sporting a hit soundtrack of contemporary pop-rock songs (the licensing of which delayed the film’s video release until 1996), the film also benefitted from Bernstein’s extraordinary symphonic score, which did the lion’s share of the musical storytelling. (Bernstein was, at the time, the regular composer for producer Ivan Reitman.)

To put it simply, Heavy Metal is Elmer Bernstein’s Star Wars – a rich, vital, thunderingly symphonic work bursting with melody and drive. The anthology nature of the film allowed Bernstein to write distinct melodies for the disparate segments: from the heroic anthem of “Den” to the moody film noir stylings of “Harry Canyon,” and, especially, to the soaring chorus and ondes Martenot of “Taarna” – the latter adapting the composer’s rejected love theme from Saturn III (1980).

Heavy Metal: The Score has long been desired by soundtrack collectors. FSM releases not only the original LP but the complete score remastered from the composer’s personal 1/4” stereo tapes (in excellent sound quality). The cues are presented in chronological order, with bonus tracks of selections edited for the 1981 Asylum Records LP – meaning listeners can program a recreation of the original album sequence, if so inclined.

Liner notes for this historical and long-anticipated CD are by Paul Andrew MacLean, drawing from interviews with Bernstein and including new comments from orchestrator David Spear, who adapted two of the cues from Bernstein’s thematic material. The package is beautifully illustrated with stills from the film.

This premiere CD release is made possible through the courtesy of Rhino Entertainment Company/Warner Special Markets, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Inc., Elektra Entertainment Group, Irving Azoff, the estate of Elmer Bernstein, the University of Southern California Cinema-Television Library, and the Loc Nar.

I didn't see it listed anywhere, is this a limited pressing of any kind?

Taarna says, don't ask so many questions.

However, this release is not limited. We will happily print as many as we can sell...

Gosh darn.
Why don't you rather show us a picture of the live model for this girl?!
:|

Wait-- what's this?!

Heavy Metal?!
One of the most requested titles?!
And there has not even been a hyper-hype campaign for this?!

Besides, I'm afraid many people won't even check this thread, due to the title.
Sorry for the criticism, Chris; it's really to help FSM & SAE.
One more bit of criticism, though: I would have loved to have this cover on the front:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y19/mike18xx/Movie-Poster-Heavy-Metal.jpg

And it's not limited?
Wow.

Now I have to play some samples; I know nothing of either movie or score, except their reputation, and the fact that one of the themes from the excellent Saturn 3 was developed in this movie (thanks to In trada's liner notes for the information!-- oh, i see now it's stated in the release's blurb, too); this alone (plus Bernstein's name) makes this a sure buy for me, at say, 80%.
The samples (or maybe even just one) ought to provide the remaining 20%, and possibly more.

Congratulations to FSM and thanks to everyone involved!

HOLY LIVING F*CK

JUST...

HOLY LIVING F*CK

Edit: I can only hope this paves the way for Slipstream. Now that we have Heavy Metal, its the only thing that stands in my way to reaching literal nirvana.

Well, everyone complained on the Blue Box that it took forever, enough with the hype, where's the beef, etc... we thought we'd play a little surprise this time... we're confident there will be a lot of buzz generated in no time. Nobody would cross Taarna.

We were contractually obligated to use the LP artwork from the score album, especially since the rock album is in print. However, if you flip the booklet over, the back side has the poster image. Everybody wins!

I ordered this one and the other new release I can't even remember now lol Eye of the Devil I think? But that film seemed interesting so I snagged the CD also. I have the OLD LP Of Heavy Metal and I never dreamed we'd get this much score on the CD release. This one really did sneak up on us! Buy this without hesitation and grab up Saturn 3 Also if you love Bernstein. It is awesome also.
