Am I right in guessing it's Eastwood and Malpaso who are stopping an official release of this score from happening? It's the one major title missing from my Fielding collection (in legitimate form) and also my number one fave score by him. Oh for a deluxe release from FSM with their lovely packaging and booklet.
I always thought the scene toward the end, where Josie replies 'I reckon we all died a little in that damn war', the way Fielding's solo trumpet got underneath and inside that feeling was just goosebump inducing.
Also, the Bugle Corp. style drum cadences that open and close the film were, just different (yet exciting).
My favorite Eastwood picture and my favorite Fielding score. I would not have been all that disappointed if it had walked away with the Oscar that year. ;-)
Based on the plethora of Fielding releases over the past few years, some major, some minor, it's obvious SOMETHING is blocking a release of this landmark Fielding score.
Any 'latest news' if this damn fine score will see a proper CD release anytime soon? Ideally, a two discer featuring the complete score (just like the SAE release) on CD1 and the fantastic LP representation, that rivals things like THE SWARM, THE FURY and DRACULA in it's 'perfect programme' sequencing, on CD2. If anyone has the old SAE release for sale or trade, let me know, as I'm up for grabbing one, to fill that Fielding hole in my collection
Watched this also recently on my DVD Special Edition! A Great Film & Score - must have a definitive release sometime 'cos loving the drum beat section!
Several years ago I asked someone around here who knows the answer to questions about this score and his reply was that there are rights issues with Malpaso, Clint Eastwood's company preventing its release (other than that which already came out on the Warner Brothers LP).
It remains strange to see his other Eastwood scores (The Enforcer, The Gauntlet, Escape from Alcatraz) have been released on cd but not Josey Wales. Not even the LP program. Not to mention the unreleased Lennie Niehaus stuff. Maybe some label will surprise us with a special Fielding centennial birthday gift!

Wait, unreleased Lennie Niehaus stuff? Did he help on Josey?
