Just got this in the mail today and have listened to it three times already!
One word: MOOG!
This stuff is fantastic! Very abstract and experimental while still retaining a classical feel. I can see why Kubrick didn't use most of it, but that dosne't take away from the listening enjoyment.
While most of the music went unheard in the final film, there are still a number of tracks that Shining fans will recognize from the DVD and old LP, such as "The Rocky Mountains", "Heartbeats and Worry", "Nocturnal Valse Triste" (From Vivian Kubrik's making of documentary), "Psychic Shout #237" and "Clockworks-Bloody Elevators" (Heard in the film's original Teaser Trailer)
Strangely absent from Vol.1 is the famous Main Title "Dies Ire" track heard over that glourious helicopter shot.
We'll have to wait for Vol.2 for that one and a number of other Shining cues.
The rest of the CD is padded out with unreleased tracks from A Clockwork Orange and a number of Unicef films. Vol.2 is apparantly due this month. I'm looking forward to it!

Thanks Mutant for clarifying what was actually in the film-the liner notes are confusing on that point.

This cd confirms that Carlos' true genius was/is as an arranger.
Purcell's "Funeral March.." is a good example.
The electronic version blows away the acoustic- yet it is very faithful. His Sibelius waltz is also excellent!

Just a warning to folks here, it seems that copies of this CD and Volume 2 are popping up from a UK Seller (world_of_discs) with low feedback, who also seems to have stock of other OOP CDs - I emailed them to ask where they got stock, as the album was OOP and got no response. Reminds me a lot of the seller I ended up getting boots of Knight Rider, The Deep and the VSD Ghostbusters with track listing errors from. Buyer beware.

German buyer of a DVD being sold confirmed that the DVD they purchased was a bootleg.

Here's a real oddity 'The Moog Cookbook' (1996) featuring Roger Manning Jr (Formally of 'Jellyfish') and Brian Kehew.
Wendy's inspiration lives on...

Another nice reference/homage is in the track "Machiavellian Bach" from the Valve game, Portal 2

During one level near the end of the game, the AI personality core "Wheatley" is trying to appear erudite and cultured. The song that plays here devolves into a delicious blend of something straight out of Carlos' early classical [re-]works of the late '60s / early '70s...
